Clayton State University Jazz Combo Presents “Spirit of Rhythm” in Spivey Hall, Apr. 22

The Clayton State University Department of Music presents the Clayton State University Jazz Combo in “The Spirit of Rhythm: Latin, Swing, Urban & Beyond” on Wednesday, Apr. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Spivey Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

“This semester’s concert celebrates rhythms from a variety of sources outside of the swing tradition, including Latin, samba, New Orleans street parade, and urban hip-hop settings,” says Clayton State University Jazz Combo Director Stacey Houghton. “This concert (as well as all our concerts) features the art of improvisation performed by our music students.”

Highlights of “Spirit of Rhythm” include several compositions by jazz master Horace Silver, original compositions and arrangements by Houghton and Clayton State student Wilgens Pierre, a special guest vocalist appearance by Clayton State Director of Vocal and Operatic Studies Dr. Kurt-Alexander Zeller, and a special audience participation number.

And speaking of audience participation, a colorful concert participation prop will be given to the first 60 people in attendance.

Lending their music talent to the Clayton State University Jazz Combo are the following musicians: Houghton (Rex) on soprano saxophone; Michael Wheeler (Forest Park) and Wilgens Pierre (Mableton) on trumpets; Carl Dixon (Morrow) on tenor saxophone; Shaun Brooks (Peachtree City) on trombone; Pablo Melgar (Lawrenceville) on piano & keyboard; Chris Odom (Lovejoy) on guitars; Chris Whitley (Forest Park) on bass; and Jack Adams (Lovejoy) and Courtney Tatum (Lovejoy) on drums & percussion.

Audiences interested in jazz music as performed by the Clayton State University Jazz Combo may also enjoy the upcoming Clayton Community Big Band performance of “Ties That Bind: A Cavalcade of Musical Friends” on Monday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Spivey Hall.
