/PRNewswire/ -- Georgia Tech's second annual Guthman Musical Instrument Competition will conclude with a final public performance at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 27, 2010 in Atlanta. The competition, supported by the philanthropy of alumnus Richard Guthman, is the only one of its kind in showcasing artists, musicians and entrepreneurs with radical new ideas for music performance and technology.
An expert panel of judges will review entries based on musicality, design and engineering, for prizes of $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place and $2,000 for third place.
Judges include:

-- Johannes Goebel, Founding Director of Experimental Media and

Future Group at MIT Media Lab
The event will be held in the J. Allen Couch Building, 840 McMillan Street, on the Georgia Tech campus. Admission is free and doors open at noon for a panel discussion with the judges. Performances by the competition finalists will begin at 1 PM and prizes will be awarded at the end of the final performances.
Preliminary performances will be held on Friday, February 26, from 10 AM to 4 PM in both the J. Allen Couch Building and the West Architecture Building at 247 Fourth Street NW. Immediately following the preliminary performances, there will be an open house showcase of unique music-making projects, research, and experiences from faculty and students in the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. The Open House will be in the J. Allen Couch Building and all are invited to attend.

Georgia Tech Announces Winners of First Guthman Musical Instrument Competition

The competition - supported by the philanthropic family of Tech alum Richard Guthman - showcased new uses of technology to enhance participation in music performance and music creation.
Nearly 30 inventors from seven countries performed on Georgia Tech's campus in the competition for more than $15,000 in prizes. Guest judges Eran Egozy, of video game development company Harmonix Music Systems, and digital music writer Eliot Van Buskirk joined the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology to score the instruments for their musicality, design and engineering. Eric Singer from the League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots (LEMUR) won second place for his robotic guitar, and SLABS Touch Pads by David Wessel of the Center of New Music and Audio Technologies at the University of California, Berkeley, took third place.
"We were blown away by the diversity and quality of the competitors - it was great to see ideas from commercial firms, academicians and just creative young musicians," said Tech music director Frank Clark. "Thanks to the Guthmans, we think the Musical Instrument Competition will expose new paradigms of expression year after year."
"It was a very open and competitive group of people with some very high quality instruments," said Oliver, a doctoral student at University of California, San Diego. "Judging was good and diverse, and technical support was great."
Oliver's instrument is a drum shell with an elastic spandex head, illuminated from the inside, that uses shapes and shadows to compute and control sound. Other entries included Sorisu, which responded and accompanies a player's movements in the game Soduko; the Tongue Music System; and a whimsical star-and-circle-shaped contraption with exposed wires that uttered slow, mysterious sounds.
"Since this was the first competition of its kind, it brought together people that had been working on the subject for decades," said Oliver. "Good competitions have a feedback effect and I wouldn't be surprised to see this one having an effect in the number and quality of instruments that are developed in the following years."
"Anyone that has an idea should come, get some feedback and perhaps win," said Oliver. "Many of us do this trying to find ways of realizing sound morphologies that contain the nuance of human performance, unsatisfied with complex automations, in need of performing, of feeling that materiality that sometimes electronic sounds lack."

Musician Inventors Play to Win at Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology
/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Six finalists of the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition will perform Saturday at Georgia Tech in the hopes of winning $5,000. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. for an open-house showcase of the Center for Music Technology's recent work and performances begin at 1 p.m.
Judges for the competition include Eran Egozy, co-founder and chief technical officer of Cambridge-based video game development company Harmonix Music Systems, which developed Guitar Hero(R) and Rock Band(R); digital music expert Eliot Van Buskirk, an author, columnist and blogger who writes for the award-winning technology magazine Wired; and a faculty representative from the Center for Music Technology, whose researchers are developing new ways to compose, listen to and perform music.
"We are in an exciting era where the general public is starting to see how technology can enhance participation in music performance and music creation," Egozy said. "I think this competition is coming at a great time. It will encourage and reward innovation in this rapidly changing field."

GT: Creating New Ways for Audiences to Participate in Performance
Music Professor Jason Freeman created Piano Etudes, a Web-based application that allows audiences to participate in the composition process.
According to Freeman, his Piano Etudes are not like traditional etudes that you might go and hear a musician play in a concert. In Freeman’s Piano Etudes, everyone is involved in the process of composing the musical piece.
“You can go and listen to a musician play at the concert, but you can also get involved by going to the companion Web site,” said Freeman. “On the Web site you’re able to look at musical fragments, the little building blocks that make up the Etudes, and rearrange them however you want.”
According to Freeman, by rearranging the fragments you’re able to create your own unique version of the piece. Once you’ve created your own version, the Web site allows you share the piece with friends on many social networking sites. The music can also be downloaded as MP3 files or even as conventional musical scores that can be performed in concert.
“I developed Piano Etudes because I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the distinctions that get drawn between people that compose music, people who perform music and people who only get to listen to music,” said Freeman. “For me, these distinctions seem artificial.”
Freeman said that his most fulfilling musical experiences are when he is able to compose, create and perform. “When I do all of those things, I listen to music differently,” said Freeman. “I’m more involved in it and it is much more fulfilling. I am hoping others will share in this experience through Piano Etudes and many of my other works.”
Freeman wrote Piano Etudes for pianist Jenny Lin, who challenged him to explore what a musical etude would be in a contemporary cultural environment.
“What a modern etude meant to me was the ability for the pianist and Web site participants to take part in the composition process,” said Freeman. “The performer’s task really becomes interesting then, because the musician must take all of these possibilities and make the piece his or her own.”
Upcoming concerts include Spivey Hall in Atlanta on April 1st, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC on April 5th, and Strathmore in Maryland on May 7th.

Yellow Jacket Marching Band Set to Play in Macy's Parade
Georgia will be well represented in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as Georgia Tech’s Yellow Jacket Marching Band takes center stage. The group is one of two college bands selected to perform during the traditional kick-off to the holiday season.
The parade will be broadcast live Thursday, November 27, 2008, on NBC from 9:00AM until noon (EST). The Yellow Jacket Marching Band has been informed that they will be marching by the camera at approximately 10:07AM
“With 2008 representing the band’s 100th anniversary, we cannot think of a better way to celebrate than taking part in this traditional holiday event,” says Band Director Chris Moore.
Transporting 360 members plus their instruments is no small task. The group will be transported via eight buses along with one truck loaded with instruments ranging from 30 tubas to 31drums. The band is set leave on Sunday, November 23 for the 800-plus-mile trek.
Established in 1908, the Yellow Jacket Marching Band is one of the oldest such programs in the country. Members of the band are part of a group of more than 1,100 Georgia Tech students who sing, play or study music each semester at a university that offers no undergraduate degrees in music. Band members represent every major and many nations around the world.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is not the first time the band has been in the limelight. Band members appeared at the Kenny Chesney and Sugarland concert during their 2007 summer tour in Atlanta. They also were asked to perform with Keith Urban during his spring concert at Gwinnett Arena earlier this year.

Georgia Tech Launches Center for Music Technology
PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Georgia Tech today launches the new Center for Music Technology with more than 20 researchers from the arts, sciences and engineering. Several interdisciplinary projects already in progress will be demonstrated today at an exclusive launch event for potential collaborators.
"Our goal is to build an international center for creative and technological research in music that will redefine the way we create, perform, listen to and consume music," says Dr. Gil Weinberg, co-founder and director of the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. "To that end, we brought together top researchers from across campus who together can address current challenges in the field and develop new solutions that cannot be achieved in the framework of a single discipline."
Unlike much current research in music, the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology is committed to bringing new ideas to the market, with applied solutions for businesses and consumers. Researchers are already working on ways to improve existing acoustical instruments, as well as defining new approaches for music making. "One of our new projects, called ZooZ Beat, for example, allows anyone with a cell phone to use expressive gestures to create and share music in a group," explains Weinberg. "Other projects explore concepts like wearable devices for music therapy, audience participation in live performance, robotic musicianship, music as an assistive medium for the visually impaired and computational analysis of music at the signal level." Other research areas include composition, machine listening, materials science, music information retrieval, digital signal processing, design and manufacturing, networked music, music perception, music theory, multimedia development and acoustics.
"It is important to note that the students who work with our faculty members bring with them a wide range of skills and experiences, from the technical to the artistic," stresses Weinberg. "More than half of our students are pursuing a Master of Science in Music Technology degree in a relatively new program at Georgia Tech that encourages students to explore their creativity both technically and musically. We are currently in the process of proposing a PhD degree in Music Technology, which will allow our students to deepen their education in these areas and help develop a strong intellectual backbone for research activities in the Center."
