An artist of formidable technical accomplishment and wonderfully sophisticated musicianship (Atlanta Journal-Constitution), Englishman David Russell is a supremely accomplished guitarist who "possesses a talent of extraordinary dimension" (New York Times).
A Grammy Award winner, Russell is performing in Clayton State University’s world-famous Spivey Hall on Saturday evening, Apr. 4, at 8:15 p.m.
Russell has enjoyed a long and prolific relationship with the Telarc label; his latest CD, released in March 2007, is Art of the Guitar. "A phrase played by [David Russell] is a thing of such clarity and direction that it seems almost physically palpable," observes the American Record Guide. "It is an object of such polish, perfect curvature, and ineluctable sweep that one feels as though one could pick it up and examine it as if it were a sculpture."
Russell returns to Spivey Hall for both a special guitar master class on Friday, Apr. 3, and his solo recital on Saturday, Apr. 4.

Richard Morris Gives Annual Spivey Hall Recital on April 4
Spivey Hall organist-in-residence Richard Morris will give his annual recital in Clayton State University’s world-famous performance venue on Saturday, Apr. 4 at 3 p.m.
Morris commands a vast knowledge of the organ repertoire as well as a quick wit; his commentary from the stage is both informative and entertaining. Charles Wadsworth Concert Marks an 80th Birthday Celebration
This year’s Charles Wadsworth & Friends concert takes on special significance as it serves as a celebration of acclaimed pianist and musician Charles Wadsworth’s 80th birthday. This year also marks a turning point in Wadsworth’s career as he approaches an octogenarian status and looks forward to a less rigorous schedule. Wadsworth stated, “I’ve been involved in the Festival in Spoleto, Italy, for 50 years now and in the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston for well over 30 years. I’ve enjoyed touring, but it’s involved traveling from one city to another, often without a break, and much of it has been international traveling for extended periods.” Having recently returned from an extensive and highly successful series of concerts in South America with several audiences that numbered in the thousands, Wadsworth says, “I’m giving it up!”

Not only because it nearly coincides with my birthday, but also because my wife Susan, my two daughters, my grandchildren, and several other relatives will join me for the occasion.”
Wadsworth’s achievement of attaining octogenarian status represents a notable accomplishment. Marking that date, accompanied by such a massive list of credits, makes it a far more impressive birthday. Touring throughout the U.S. and the world, performing for heads-of-state and for audiences that now total in the millions, receiving such an abundance of accolades and awards … the sum of it all is much more than substantial. Only a few such native sons have gained such fame.
Over the years, Charles Wadsworth has devoted more and more of his time to fostering musical talent and spotlighting the most accomplished musicians of today and tomorrow. On March 28 the “Wadsworth & Friends” concert continues that goal when Wadsworth accompanies five of classical music’s finest performers in the newly refurbished Art Deco Newnan auditorium named in his honor. The audience will be treated to an evening of world-class entertainment … just a few hundred feet from where the young Charles Wadsworth lived as a boy and began the journey of his career.
Tickets for the 7:30 pm event will be available at Scott’s Bookstore in Newnan, Morgan’s Jewelry in Ashley Park, and the Bank of Coweta at Thomas Crossroads. General seating adult tickets are $20 and Senior/Student tickets are $15.

Open Mic Night at The Fred
If your dream is to perform in front of a live audience, or if your garage band is convinced they’re ready to go on the road- The Fred has an opportunity for you! Open Mic Night at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City is scheduled for Saturday, May 9. “We are looking for bands, vocalists, even comedians” says Nancy Price, Manager of The Fred. “This is basically a showcase of talent and all of the participants will get the chance to perform in front of a live audience that night with professional sound and lighting.”

Chattanooga Boys Choir in Concert with Southern Nights Chorale
The Cantabile Choir of the Chattanooga Boys Choir will join the Southern Nights Chorale in a free, 90-minute choral concert at Peachtree Christian Church on Sunday, May 17th at 3:00. The church is located at 1580 Peachtree Street.
The Cantabile Choir is the changed-voice component of the Chattanooga Boys Choir under the direction of Vincent Oakes. The CBC was founded in 1954 as a music education and performance organization, and presently has over 140 boys from ages 8-18 in five different choirs. The Cantabile ensemble was added in 2002 from graduates of the organization's treble (unchanged voices) choirs, and many of its members have been singing together since the third grade. PTC First Presbyterian Sponsors Southern Crescent Chorale Concert March 28
First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City will be hosting the Southern Crescent Chorale in concert on Saturday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This is the fifth concert as part of the church’s 2008-2009 Concert Series season.
The Southern Crescent Chorale has established a reputation for excellence and achievement in the arts community of south Atlanta. Now in its seventh season under the direction of Janice Folsom, this 65-voice auditioned community chorus’s mission is to enrich the communities of the southern crescent with a variety of choral literature with high performance standards. The Chorale continues to develop a faithful following of excited patrons.
This concert is free to the community. A love offering will be taken. Childcare will be available for children ages 4 and younger.

Wadsworth & Friends Concert to Include 2 New Master Classes
Based on the outstanding success of last year’s two Master Classes that were held in conjunction with the 2008 Wadsworth & Friends Concert, two new Master Classes will new be offered as an integral part of this year’s event.

comments are replaced by the far more personal, intimate, informed, and individualized instructions and comments of a practiced professional in that talent or skill.”
Referring to last year’s Master Class for strings students, Dr. Lyn Schenbeck of Smokey Road Middle School and Director of the Arts at the Central Educational Center stated, “My Smokey Road orchestral string students were very excited about last year’s Master Class with violinist Chee-Yun. As a result, they all began to practice more seriously and are playing much better this year. It was exciting to watch a seasoned professional be so inspiring to young people. We thank everyone involved for bringing in such amazing talent!”
Invitations have been sent by the City of Newnan’s Cultural Arts Commission to the heads of musical departments in county schools, inviting students to attend the two Master Classes that will be conducted on Friday, March 28th, at The Centre for Performing & Visual Arts. Don Nixon, Director at The Centre, has played a pivotal role in implementing the classes that were initially conceived by Newnan’s Mayor Keith Brady and Charles Wadsworth.
Since providing the Master Classes represents a significant added expense, the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission solicited sponsorships from the community. Based on the enthusiastic response to the 2008 classes, Cargill and Newnan’s Rotary Club each agreed to again sponsor one of the Master Classes. Cargill’s Vice President and General Manager Bradley Down said, “At Cargill, we believe in our youth, and the arts represent a very important part of their education. We feel a corporate responsibility to help in this area and support this special program.” Newnan Rotary’s President Marvin McKoy commented, “Rotary gets involved in many charities, but there’s nothing more important than education and this is a quality endeavor. Our Rotary members gave an immediate and unanimous endorsement to sponsoring this project.”
Tickets for the 7:30 pm event will be available at Scott’s Bookstore in Newnan, Morgan’s Jewelry in Ashley Park, and the Bank of Coweta at Thomas Crossroads. General seating adult tickets are $20 and Senior/Student tickets are $15.

Whitewater High School Chorale Receives Standing Ovation in Savannah
Whitewater High School's Chorale was honored to perform at GMEA's (Georgia Music Educator's Association) In-Service Conference and Convention on January 30th, 2009. This conference and convention took place at Wesley Monumental Church in Savannah, GA.
Kelly Butler, Director; Hannah Beth Potter, Assistant Director and Amy Meyer, Accompanist led Whitewater High School's Chorale in songs including "O Quam Gloriosum" by Tomas Luis e Victoria; "Hear Me, I Will Live" from Crying For A Dream by Rene Clausen; "Sing A Mighty Song" by Daniel E. Gawthrop; "O nata lux" by David Dickau; "The Conversion of Saul" by Z. Randall Stroope; "God Is Seen" by Robert Shaw / Alice Parker and "Job, Job" by Stephen Hatfield. They received a standing ovation by a standing room only audience.
Whitewater High School opened in 2003 with a single freshman class. Over the past 6 school years, the choral program has grown from 80 students in 2003 to over 275 students in 2009. Six choirs meet on a daily basis while an elite a cappella ensemble rehearses after school. The Whitewater Chorale is a premier choir that was formed in 2006 with 45 upper classmen.
By 2009, the choir has grown to include over 50 auditioned 11th & 12th grade singers. Members participate in GMEA events such as District Honor Chorus and All-State Chorus, have been selected for Governor's Honors Program, and have been asked to perform at many venues in the Southern Crescent Region.
WHS Chorale continues to receive superior ratings (Class A) at performance evaluation in performance and sight-reading. The mission of the choir is to perform challenging musical literature that both the students and the conductor are passionate about, to excel in sight-reading and music theory, and to grow as musicians and individuals throughout the school year whiel participating in the choir.
Fayette County is fortunate to have such an incredible group of talented students.

Clayton State Opera Presents… “Noye’s Fludde”
“This is participatory drama!”
So says Dr. Kurt-Alexander Zeller, Clayton State University’s director of Opera and Vocal Studies. This year’s Clayton State Opera performance is “Noye’s Fludde,” a late 16th century mystery play from the Chester Mystery Cycle that was set to music by Benjamin Britten in 1957.
Taking part in the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark, in addition to eight Clayton State undergraduate students, will be 45 students from Jonesboro’s J.W. Arnold Elementary School, Clayton State Music Preparatory student Brad Raymond (Newnan), who plays Noye (aka Noah), and the audience who will be present in Clayton State’s world-famous Spivey Hall on Friday, Mar. 27 and Saturday, Mar. 28. Both performances will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 general admission (available from the Spivey Hall Box Office). Clayton State students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their Laker ID.
“Warm up before you come — the audience gets to sing along three times,” suggests Director Zeller.
In addition to the audience taking part, Zeller is very enthusiastic about the Soaring Eagle Singers from Arnold Elementary, who are conducted by Joanne Maples, and who play the animals in the opera. It’s an opportunity that Zeller says will benefit both the younger and older singers.
“Bringing elementary school children here and having them work collaboratively with Clayton State students gives them the idea about going to college. It’s a chance for them to say, `I could be a college student,’” he says. “Part of our job is opening people’s eyes that there’s more out there. And that’s true for students on all levels, from elementary school to Clayton State students.”

American Idol David Cook to Perform at The Grand in Macon
2008 American Idol winner and platinum-selling recording artist David Cook will make his Macon debut Wednesday, April 8, when the record-breaking, chart-topping rocker performs at The Grand Opera House, a performing arts center of Mercer University, during his first headline tour “The Declaration Tour – 2009.” It is his first scheduled tour date in Georgia.
The concert begins at 8 p.m., and the $25 tickets go on sale to the public Wednesday, March 18, at 10 a.m. Tickets are available through Mercer Ticket Sales at (478) 301-5470 or online at TheGrandMacon.com. Just one week after being named the winner of the seventh season of “American Idol,” 25-year-old Cook rewrote chart history, with a record-breaking 14 debuts on Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs survey. He also had 11 songs jump onto the Hot 100, the highest number of new entries ever, and the second-highest amount of simultaneous hits since the Beatles in 1964. All that, and his single, “The Time of My Life,” instantly became the highest debuting title of 2008, entering the Hot 100 at No. 3.
When this most recent season of “American Idol” began, Cook wasn’t on anyone’s radar to win the whole thing – including his own. “I like that I ‘snuck up’ on people,” he says. “During those early shows, when there were 24 people, I knew I didn’t have to be one of the best, but I didn’t want to be one of the worst. So it was fun for me because there wasn’t a lot of pressure and I could find my own footing.”
Cook won fans with his unique renditions of songs like Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” He explains, “When I began, I told vocal coach Debra Byrd I wanted the season to be like a set list, so people would feel like they were at one of my concerts.”
Cook’s musical journey began early. He grew up watching his father play guitar. But David’s first instrument of choice was the violin. “I tried that first because there was a girl in the school orchestra I thought was pretty.” When he was in seventh grade, his dad bought him a Fender Stratocaster. “I was bad at it because I never took a lesson. Gradually I got better.”
He was exposed to many different genres of music. “My parents had eclectic record collections. My mom liked Kenny Rogers and my dad was more into Boston, Kansas and Dire Straits. The first cassette tape I ever bought was by Kris Kross. I was into Boyz II Men for a while. When I was 13, someone played me the song ‘Closer’ by Nine Inch Nails and once I got past the audacity of the lyrics, I really enjoyed the song. So I backtracked through rock, which got me to where I am now.”
Cook formed a band in high school with a friend and appeared in three musicals: “West Side Story,” “Singin’ in the Rain” and “The Music Man.” He also loved sports and played baseball throughout high school. Ultimately his love for music brought his attention back to his band. Cook enrolled at Central Missouri State, changed the name of the band from Redeye to Axiom to Axium and had some local success.
As he was completing his studies, Cook had to choose between working as a graphic designer in Kansas City or moving to Tulsa to play rhythm guitar and sing backing vocals for a band called the Midwest Kings. “Of course, I moved to Tulsa,” he says. Just one week after being named the winner of the seventh season of “American Idol,” 25-year-old Cook rewrote chart history, with a record-breaking 14 debuts on Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs survey. He also had 11 songs jump onto the Hot 100, the highest number of new entries ever, and the second-highest amount of simultaneous hits since the Beatles in 1964. All that, and his single, “The Time of My Life,” instantly became the highest debuting title of 2008, entering the Hot 100 at No. 3.
When this most recent season of “American Idol” began, Cook wasn’t on anyone’s radar to win the whole thing – including his own. “I like that I ‘snuck up’ on people,” he says. “During those early shows, when there were 24 people, I knew I didn’t have to be one of the best, but I didn’t want to be one of the worst. So it was fun for me because there wasn’t a lot of pressure and I could find my own footing.”
Cook won fans with his unique renditions of songs like Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” He explains, “When I began, I told vocal coach Debra Byrd I wanted the season to be like a set list, so people would feel like they were at one of my concerts.”
Cook’s musical journey began early. He grew up watching his father play guitar. But David’s first instrument of choice was the violin. “I tried that first because there was a girl in the school orchestra I thought was pretty.” When he was in seventh grade, his dad bought him a Fender Stratocaster. “I was bad at it because I never took a lesson. Gradually I got better.”
He was exposed to many different genres of music. “My parents had eclectic record collections. My mom liked Kenny Rogers and my dad was more into Boston, Kansas and Dire Straits. The first cassette tape I ever bought was by Kris Kross. I was into Boyz II Men for a while. When I was 13, someone played me the song ‘Closer’ by Nine Inch Nails and once I got past the audacity of the lyrics, I really enjoyed the song. So I backtracked through rock, which got me to where I am now.”
Cook formed a band in high school with a friend and appeared in three musicals: “West Side Story,” “Singin’ in the Rain” and “The Music Man.” He also loved sports and played baseball throughout high school. Ultimately his love for music brought his attention back to his band. Cook enrolled at Central Missouri State, changed the name of the band from Redeye to Axiom to Axium and had some local success.
As he was completing his studies, Cook had to choose between working as a graphic designer in Kansas City or moving to Tulsa to play rhythm guitar and sing backing vocals for a band called the Midwest Kings. “Of course, I moved to Tulsa,” he says. Georgia Tech Announces Winners of First Guthman Musical Instrument Competition
/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Georgia Tech's Center for Music Technology announced Jaime Oliver's Silent Drum won first place in the first Guthman Musical Instrument Competition. The competition - supported by the philanthropic family of Tech alum Richard Guthman - showcased new uses of technology to enhance participation in music performance and music creation.
Nearly 30 inventors from seven countries performed on Georgia Tech's campus in the competition for more than $15,000 in prizes. Guest judges Eran Egozy, of video game development company Harmonix Music Systems, and digital music writer Eliot Van Buskirk joined the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology to score the instruments for their musicality, design and engineering. Eric Singer from the League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots (LEMUR) won second place for his robotic guitar, and SLABS Touch Pads by David Wessel of the Center of New Music and Audio Technologies at the University of California, Berkeley, took third place.
"We were blown away by the diversity and quality of the competitors - it was great to see ideas from commercial firms, academicians and just creative young musicians," said Tech music director Frank Clark. "Thanks to the Guthmans, we think the Musical Instrument Competition will expose new paradigms of expression year after year."
"It was a very open and competitive group of people with some very high quality instruments," said Oliver, a doctoral student at University of California, San Diego. "Judging was good and diverse, and technical support was great."
Oliver's instrument is a drum shell with an elastic spandex head, illuminated from the inside, that uses shapes and shadows to compute and control sound. Other entries included Sorisu, which responded and accompanies a player's movements in the game Soduko; the Tongue Music System; and a whimsical star-and-circle-shaped contraption with exposed wires that uttered slow, mysterious sounds.
"Since this was the first competition of its kind, it brought together people that had been working on the subject for decades," said Oliver. "Good competitions have a feedback effect and I wouldn't be surprised to see this one having an effect in the number and quality of instruments that are developed in the following years."
"Anyone that has an idea should come, get some feedback and perhaps win," said Oliver. "Many of us do this trying to find ways of realizing sound morphologies that contain the nuance of human performance, unsatisfied with complex automations, in need of performing, of feeling that materiality that sometimes electronic sounds lack."

Musicology and the Ugarte Studio Join to Offer Lessons in Newnan
Musicology and The Ugarte Studio are joining to offer lessons in Newnan, starting in March. Group voices lessons will be offered at Musicology as an Introduction to Voice, starting on March 12 for four weeks.
“I kept receiving requests for voice lessons in Newnan,” explained Maria Pia Ugarte, founder of The Ugarte Studio, currently based in Fayetteville and servicing students in that area and in Peachtree City. “I have known of Doug Kees for quite some time and everybody spoke very highly of him, so I decided to get in touch and see if we could work something out.” After a successful meeting, Musicology and The Ugarte Studio agreed on a joint effort to start offering more services in music education in Newnan. “We will start with voice group lessons and go from there,” said Ugarte.
Musicology was founded by Doug Kees through Doug Kees Music Services in January of 2007 and currently provides music education to hundreds of students in Coweta County. Doug Kees began professional performances while still in high school in Atlanta. He continued studying music at Georgia State University where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. Since that time, with thousands of performances to his credit, he has performed in concert halls, nightclubs, churches, fraternity houses, recording studios, restaurants, and schools from Seattle to Detroit, from Memphis to Key West and across the Southeast.
The Ugarte Studio was founded in Peachtree City in 1998 by Maria Pia Ugarte, Artistic Director of Voices and founder of the female solo ensemble Zaphyra. After a two-year sabbatical, The Ugarte Studio reopened last year in Fayetteville. Ms. Ugarte holds degrees with honors from Peru and New York University, having attended The Juilliard School. It is there where she met world renown conductor, Maestro Vincent La Selva, Founder and Artistic Director of New York Grand Opera. Since then, she has coached opera under his tutelage. Ms. Ugarte has performed in South America and The United States, in New York with New York Grand Opera, and in Atlanta with renown American composer Pauline Oliveros. She can currently be heard with Voices and Zaphyra in The Southern Arc.

Spivey Hall’s entire weekend of Mar. 6 to Mar. 8 will be devoted to artists making their debut’s at Clayton State University’s world-famous performance facility.

Musician Inventors Play to Win at Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology
/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Six finalists of the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition will perform Saturday at Georgia Tech in the hopes of winning $5,000. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. for an open-house showcase of the Center for Music Technology's recent work and performances begin at 1 p.m.

The British Are Coming … to Henry County!
British Invasion is second in “Sounds of the 60s” Live Concert Series
Music from “across the pond” will fill the air at the Jason T. Harper Event Center in Heritage Park in Henry County, Georgia! The live show is slated for Saturday, May 9, 2009. It is the second of the “Sounds of the 60s” concert series of live music events produced by local company Speer Entertainment Services/Really Big Productions, Inc. The debut concert, “Sound of the 60’s – Solid Gold”, was held at the same venue last October.
The talent line up is a who’s who of British Invasion-era artists. Artists scheduled to perform include:
· Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone, best known for hits like “I'm Henry the VIII I Am” · “I'm Into Something Good” · “Mrs. Brown You've Got A lovely Daughter” and “There's A Kind of Hush.”
· Peter & Gordon performing favorites including “I Go To Pieces” · “Lady Godiva” · “Nobody I Know” · “True Love Ways” and “Woman.”
· Terry Sylvester formerly of the Hollies with favorites such as “The Air That I Breathe” · “He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother” · “Just One Look” and “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress.”

Sousa, Stars and Stripes Forever! Offers Taste of Past with Timeless Music
The Army Ground Forces Band invites you to spend a mid-March day with “The March King,” John Philip Sousa, at the Georgia Tech Ferst Center for the Arts, Sunday, March 15, 3 p.m. No tickets are required.
Sousa, Stars and Stripes Forever! is a free and unabashedly patriotic concert that offers Atlantans an opportunity to step back in time to when the concert band was king of the entertainment scene.
“This will be a fun concert performed by our world-class musicians in the style of the famous Sousa Band,” said the band commander, Maj. Domingos Robinson.
“In addition to Sousa marches such as The Stars and Stripes Forever, we will be playing great pieces from Sousa’s time that will include works by Franz von Suppé, Percy Grainger and Richard Wagner.”
The band will showcase its principal trombonist, Sgt. 1st Class Chris Rozmarin, performing Arthur Pryor’s Blue Bells of Scotland and the horn section performing Robert Schumann’s Concertpiece for Four Horns.
Sousa's formula for a great concert was to include orchestral music, solo compositions, novelty pieces and patriotic music, fulfilling his dual purpose of entertaining the audience and bringing the best music available to the public.
He would follow up most songs on the program with a march that was not printed in the program.
His band exposed the masses to both great classical pieces and his own original compositions by extensive touring that took him to small towns all over the United States from 1892 to 1932. His became a household name in large part because his programming style was so effective.

National Museum of American History and USA Weekend Magazine Partner for National Anthem YouTube Singing Contest
/PRNewswire/ -- The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, home of the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired the national anthem, has partnered with USA Weekend Magazine to launch the Star-Spangled Banner YouTube Singing Contest on Sunday, Feb. 15.
"The Star-Spangled Banner is one of our nation's most treasured objects, a symbol of what this country stands for," said Brent D. Glass, director of the museum. "We thought that this contest would be a fun way to dispel the notion that history is boring and engage people with their flag and their anthem."
Fifteen semi-finalists will be selected by April 17 according to vocal performance, originality, accuracy and popularity on YouTube. All semi-finalists will receive a signed copy of the book "The Star Spangled Banner: The Making of an American Icon," and their videos will be featured on the museum's Star-Spangled Banner Web site.
The top video will be chosen by a panel of celebrities, Smithsonian judges and a representative from the Orioles and announced May 19. The winner will be invited to perform the national anthem at the museum and at the Baltimore Orioles versus Atlanta Braves game in Baltimore on Flag Day, June 14. USA Weekend will provide the winner with a trip for two to Washington, D.C., including airfare, hotel accommodation for two nights, tickets and transportation to the game and $400 spending money.
"This is the first YouTube contest at the Smithsonian and it fits well with the notion that the Star-Spangled Banner belongs to everyone," said Matthew MacArthur, the museum's director of New Media.

GT: Creating New Ways for Audiences to Participate in Performance
Music Professor Jason Freeman created Piano Etudes, a Web-based application that allows audiences to participate in the composition process.
According to Freeman, his Piano Etudes are not like traditional etudes that you might go and hear a musician play in a concert. In Freeman’s Piano Etudes, everyone is involved in the process of composing the musical piece.
“You can go and listen to a musician play at the concert, but you can also get involved by going to the companion Web site,” said Freeman. “On the Web site you’re able to look at musical fragments, the little building blocks that make up the Etudes, and rearrange them however you want.”
According to Freeman, by rearranging the fragments you’re able to create your own unique version of the piece. Once you’ve created your own version, the Web site allows you share the piece with friends on many social networking sites. The music can also be downloaded as MP3 files or even as conventional musical scores that can be performed in concert.
“I developed Piano Etudes because I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the distinctions that get drawn between people that compose music, people who perform music and people who only get to listen to music,” said Freeman. “For me, these distinctions seem artificial.”
Freeman said that his most fulfilling musical experiences are when he is able to compose, create and perform. “When I do all of those things, I listen to music differently,” said Freeman. “I’m more involved in it and it is much more fulfilling. I am hoping others will share in this experience through Piano Etudes and many of my other works.”
Freeman wrote Piano Etudes for pianist Jenny Lin, who challenged him to explore what a musical etude would be in a contemporary cultural environment.
“What a modern etude meant to me was the ability for the pianist and Web site participants to take part in the composition process,” said Freeman. “The performer’s task really becomes interesting then, because the musician must take all of these possibilities and make the piece his or her own.”
Upcoming concerts include Spivey Hall in Atlanta on April 1st, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC on April 5th, and Strathmore in Maryland on May 7th.

Atlanta Braves Searching for Bands to Perform Before 2009 Braves Home Games
The Atlanta Braves are looking for bands who think they have what it takes to energize and entertain thousands of fans at Turner Field before a home Braves game in 2009. Country, rock, pop, cover, or original bands can submit their information for review at www.braves.com/bravesbands.

Music Legend Joins Georgia Academy of Dance & the Performing Arts!
Georgia Academy of Dance & the Performing Arts is the premier performing arts school within our local community offering performing arts education with top professional instructors from around the nation. Joining their staff of performing arts professionals is Dr. Franklin Green, a Pi Kappa Lambda with a major in choral conducting, minor in vocal performance.
In addition to his doctorate of the University of Georgia, Dr. Green obtained his masters from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, majoring in music history and vocal concentration, and his bachelors from the University of Georgia, majoring in music education and vocal concentration and receiving magna cum laude honors.
Throughout his career, Dr. Green has served as a church musician, public school choral director, and college professor around the southeast. He also served on the voice faculty for Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. For over ten years, his choirs have been nationally recognized, singing for state, regional, and national conventions for choral directors.
Before his teaching career, Dr. Green was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the ASO Chamber Chorus under the direction of the well-known, Robert Shaw. Additionally, Dr. Green has been a guest soloist with many regional colleges, universities, and choral societies and is sought after as a judge and clinician.
He currently teaches privately and directs the Georgia Singers. Georgia Singers, Inc. is a Georgia Non-Profit Corporation, which sponsors two community choirs for young women from grade seven through young adults with fifty plus members. Dr. Green is also the Coordinator of the Lexus Scholarships for the Stars program which annually provides $25,000 in college scholarships for future music majors from Fayette County. Additionally, he is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Division of the American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA).
Dr. Franklin Green will begin teaching private voice lessons at GAD & the Performing Arts in January 2009, adding yet another prestige artist and educator to their staff.
GAD & the Performing Arts private voice lessons provide students with a superior learning atmosphere enabling each individual to learn at their own pace. Additionally, their private lessons allow instructors to focus on individual weaknesses and strengths and cater to the student’s learning style. These lessons are excellent opportunities for in-school choral students to enhance their technique and progress at a much faster pace - without the intimidation of a large group setting. Introduction to voice consists of instruction in building foundations that last and developing essential skills for growing voices (ages 6, 7, & 8). Voice lessons, ages 9 & up, involves instruction in building a foundation, developing proper singing techniques, and ensuring the proper use of the voice (posture, breathing, warm-ups, tone, diction, rhythm, etc.)
Additionally, GAD & the Performing Arts provides the highest level of music education with exquisite facilities, private music rooms, and viewing windows. All students will have at least one performance per year. Additionally, intermediate to advanced students may participate in the Music Teachers National Association competitions if selected by the music instructor.

Army Ground Forces Band Ensemble to Play a Free Dixieland Concert at Spivey Hall
The Old Flint River Dixieland Band, and ensemble of the Army Ground Forces Band, will give a free concert in Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall this coming Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 11:15 a.m.

Fun at the Fred begins with All-Star Lineup for 2009 Summer Concerts

The Fred will be rockin’ this summer with the songs you know and love showcasing beach music, country, pop, rock and more. The Fred, a 2500 seat outdoor amphitheater in Peachtree City will host a six concert series that will span May – August featuring a variety of music that will span the decades .

The price for a series ticket, (all six concerts) is $240 per person for reserved seating and $300 for Gold Seating. A limited number of Picnic Tables are available for $1800 for the series and Gold Tables are $3,000. Existing series ticket holders will be able to renew their tickets from January 26-February 20. New series tickets will go on sale to the public on Saturday, March 7 at the Fred Box Office from 9 a.m – 12 pm. Individual tickets will be available for purchase beginning March 14. Four additional spotlight concerts will be announced by the end of January, which will target various demographic audiences and genres of music. These spotlight concerts will be one night performances only and will be scheduled throughout the season. Additionally, The Fred will host a number of community events throughout the summer including “Flicks at the Fred”, “50’s Family Sock Hop” and “Open Mic” nights. A full schedule of events is expected to be released by the first week of February.

Chicago Jazz Ensemble Comes to Carrollton January 24
Jazz enthusiasts will be dazzled by the second annual “Live Art at the Townsend Center” event featuring The Chicago Jazz Ensemble starring Jon Faddis on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The 21-member Chicago Jazz Ensemble consists of musicians with national recognition, acclaimed Columbia College Chicago faculty and some of the city’s most talented artists. Faddis, conductor, composer and educator known for his intense integrity and humor, was formerly the artistic director of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band.
The Chicago Jazz Ensemble’s mission is to represent, preserve and promote the innovative traditions of American orchestral Jazz music. Founded in 1965 by distinguished composer and conductor William Russo, the ensemble entered a new phase in its history with the appointment of trumpet virtuoso Faddis as its artistic director.
Faddis has a 30-year history of performing and collaborating with the world’s foremost Jazz artists, including Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. Faddis earned accolades from his close friend and mentor Gillespie, who declared of Faddis, “He’s the best ever, including me!” As a trumpeter, Faddis possesses a virtually unparalleled range, making the practically impossible seem effortless.
Also appearing in Carrollton with this elite group of musicians will be Ignacio Berroa, recognized by many as one of the greatest drummers of our times. Known as the “Afro-Cuban drumming maestro,” Berroa’s numerous contributions to the American music scene has earned him a place among a very selective group of artists known to have set new musical trends for the 20th century.
“Live Art at the Townsend Center,” which started in 2008, was a successful venture into increasing artistic opportunities for UWG and the Carrollton community. Michelle Morgan, Susan Fleck and Claire Cooley, co-chairs of the upcoming Live Art event, said the gala once again brings critically acclaimed artists to the area.
“Each year, we hope to raise the bar of cultural options in the West Georgia region,” Fleck said. “We’re hoping to duplicate the success of Ballet Memphis last year. It was such a positive event and everyone was on such a high. We want to keep it that way and build on that enthusiasm.”
UWG jazz musicians, jazz musicians from the local schools, private schools, homeschools, etc. and adult jazz musicians from the surrounding communities may register to participate in a 90-minute workshop conducted by Faddis at 2:30 p.m. in the third-floor Humanities Building Band Room. Interested individuals may call the Townsend Center for details.
Two ticket options are available. Individual tickets for the performance only are $42 and are available at the Townsend Center Box Office, 678-839-4722. “Opening Night Club” membership includes two tickets to the performance, valet parking, VIP pre-performance and intermission reception in the Dangle Theater, two tickets to the cast party following the performance featuring “A Blast” band and a Chicago inspired menu, plus appearances by Faddis and the Ensemble. Peachtree City Church to Swing to Peachtree Jazz
First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City will be hosting the Peachtree Jazz Edition in concert on Saturday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This is the fourth concert as part of the church’s 2008-2009 Concert Series season.
Peachtree Jazz Edition is heralded as one of the best jazz bands in Atlanta. This group features an 18-piece band comprised of talented musicians from the greater-Atlanta area. They will have you moving to the rhythm of the hits from the Big Band era of the ‘30s and ‘40s, and popular jazz tunes. This jazz ensemble will perform original arrangements from artists such as Frank Sinatra, Glen Miller, and Natalie Cole, as well as original tunes written by band trombonist and Fayetteville resident Bill Greenhaw.
This concert is free to the community. A love offering will be taken with part of the proceeds going to support the church’s missions program. Childcare will be available for children ages 4 and younger.

Nintendo’s Wii Music Strikes a Chord with Music Educators
(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nintendo’s new Wii Music™ game is spreading from the family room to the classroom, thanks to newly formed collaborations with select schools and educators. To help inspire students and promote an active appreciation for music, Nintendo is working with teachers to incorporate Wii™ consoles and Wii Music software into their lesson plans to offer teachers a unique tool for creativity and improvisation.
Nintendo’s collaborators in this effort include MENC: The National Association for Music Education, which is recognized as the world’s largest arts education organization and as a teaching resource for all levels from preschool to graduate school. MENC will help teachers in 51 cities across the nation integrate Wii Music into their curricula, making use of the game’s 60-plus instruments and fun array of tutorial exercises in rhythm, tempo and song structure.
“The goal of Wii Music is to inspire people of all ages to enjoy music,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “By partnering with educators and bringing Wii Music into their classrooms, we hope to give students a memorable, hands-on experience that helps them discover their own creative voice.”
The Wii console’s motion-sensing controls allow Wii Music users at any experience level to step up and jam, whether playing solo or as part of a group. Using the wireless Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk™ controllers, players make simple, intuitive movements to strum a guitar, play a trumpet or bang a drum.
“At any grade level, it’s essential to provide students with the tools and encouragement they need to be creative,” said John J. Mahlmann, executive director of MENC. “We look forward to collaborating with Nintendo to drive awareness and advocacy for music education through Wii Music.”
Some teachers already have begun to incorporate Wii Music into their lesson plans.
“Wii Music has brought a renewed excitement to music class for students from first grade to fifth, myself and even some of the classroom teachers,” said Helen A. Krofchick, a music teacher at Doby’s Mill Elementary School in Lugoff, S.C. “I love how many music standards can be covered in such a short time. Students also have to use language skills, spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination. We have a school very supportive of the arts and Wii Music has empowered our program even more. Any system that is educational and can add a love of music to children’s lives should be in every classroom.”
Other collaborating and partner organizations currently include San Francisco’s Blue Bear School of Music and New York’s Opus 118 Harlem School of Music. Teachers in these programs will use Wii Music to build students’ familiarity with technology while bolstering their ability to create and improvise. Experts in the field of music say getting kids interested in music at an early age can help build a lifelong appreciation.
“The joy of playing music is something that should be experienced by everyone, regardless of age, talent-level or experience,” said Joe Lamond, President & CEO of NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants. “Research shows that more than 82 percent of people who don’t currently play a musical instrument wish they did. Wii Music can help address this by providing a positive introduction for millions of people who might not otherwise be inclined to try.”
