Heavy Hitters - Thursday, February 26, 5-8 p.m. and Wednesday, March 4, 5-8 p.m.
The Braves electrifying Heavy Hitters drum line performs before, during, and after Braves games at Turner Field.
The Braves are looking for musicians with confidence and charisma, a flexible schedule, and the ability to work games in their entirety every Friday, Saturday and Sunday home game during the season.
PHOTO and VIDEO OPPORTUNITIES: Individuals trying out for the Heavy Hitters drum line will showcase their percussion abilities with instruments including snare, quad, base, and tenor drums, and symbols.

The Braves are looking for high-energy, spirited individuals, with the ability to engage fans, work within a family environment, and perform in front of large crowds.
The Braves Tomahawk Team performs at all home games and many events throughout the community.

Sousa, Stars and Stripes Forever! Offers Taste of Past with Timeless Music
The Army Ground Forces Band invites you to spend a mid-March day with “The March King,” John Philip Sousa, at the Georgia Tech Ferst Center for the Arts, Sunday, March 15, 3 p.m. No tickets are required.
Sousa, Stars and Stripes Forever! is a free and unabashedly patriotic concert that offers Atlantans an opportunity to step back in time to when the concert band was king of the entertainment scene.
“This will be a fun concert performed by our world-class musicians in the style of the famous Sousa Band,” said the band commander, Maj. Domingos Robinson.
“In addition to Sousa marches such as The Stars and Stripes Forever, we will be playing great pieces from Sousa’s time that will include works by Franz von Suppé, Percy Grainger and Richard Wagner.”
The band will showcase its principal trombonist, Sgt. 1st Class Chris Rozmarin, performing Arthur Pryor’s Blue Bells of Scotland and the horn section performing Robert Schumann’s Concertpiece for Four Horns.
Sousa's formula for a great concert was to include orchestral music, solo compositions, novelty pieces and patriotic music, fulfilling his dual purpose of entertaining the audience and bringing the best music available to the public.
He would follow up most songs on the program with a march that was not printed in the program.
His band exposed the masses to both great classical pieces and his own original compositions by extensive touring that took him to small towns all over the United States from 1892 to 1932. His became a household name in large part because his programming style was so effective.

National Museum of American History and USA Weekend Magazine Partner for National Anthem YouTube Singing Contest
/PRNewswire/ -- The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, home of the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired the national anthem, has partnered with USA Weekend Magazine to launch the Star-Spangled Banner YouTube Singing Contest on Sunday, Feb. 15.
"The Star-Spangled Banner is one of our nation's most treasured objects, a symbol of what this country stands for," said Brent D. Glass, director of the museum. "We thought that this contest would be a fun way to dispel the notion that history is boring and engage people with their flag and their anthem."
Fifteen semi-finalists will be selected by April 17 according to vocal performance, originality, accuracy and popularity on YouTube. All semi-finalists will receive a signed copy of the book "The Star Spangled Banner: The Making of an American Icon," and their videos will be featured on the museum's Star-Spangled Banner Web site.
The top video will be chosen by a panel of celebrities, Smithsonian judges and a representative from the Orioles and announced May 19. The winner will be invited to perform the national anthem at the museum and at the Baltimore Orioles versus Atlanta Braves game in Baltimore on Flag Day, June 14. USA Weekend will provide the winner with a trip for two to Washington, D.C., including airfare, hotel accommodation for two nights, tickets and transportation to the game and $400 spending money.
"This is the first YouTube contest at the Smithsonian and it fits well with the notion that the Star-Spangled Banner belongs to everyone," said Matthew MacArthur, the museum's director of New Media.

GT: Creating New Ways for Audiences to Participate in Performance
Music Professor Jason Freeman created Piano Etudes, a Web-based application that allows audiences to participate in the composition process.
According to Freeman, his Piano Etudes are not like traditional etudes that you might go and hear a musician play in a concert. In Freeman’s Piano Etudes, everyone is involved in the process of composing the musical piece.
“You can go and listen to a musician play at the concert, but you can also get involved by going to the companion Web site,” said Freeman. “On the Web site you’re able to look at musical fragments, the little building blocks that make up the Etudes, and rearrange them however you want.”
According to Freeman, by rearranging the fragments you’re able to create your own unique version of the piece. Once you’ve created your own version, the Web site allows you share the piece with friends on many social networking sites. The music can also be downloaded as MP3 files or even as conventional musical scores that can be performed in concert.
“I developed Piano Etudes because I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the distinctions that get drawn between people that compose music, people who perform music and people who only get to listen to music,” said Freeman. “For me, these distinctions seem artificial.”
Freeman said that his most fulfilling musical experiences are when he is able to compose, create and perform. “When I do all of those things, I listen to music differently,” said Freeman. “I’m more involved in it and it is much more fulfilling. I am hoping others will share in this experience through Piano Etudes and many of my other works.”
Freeman wrote Piano Etudes for pianist Jenny Lin, who challenged him to explore what a musical etude would be in a contemporary cultural environment.
“What a modern etude meant to me was the ability for the pianist and Web site participants to take part in the composition process,” said Freeman. “The performer’s task really becomes interesting then, because the musician must take all of these possibilities and make the piece his or her own.”
Upcoming concerts include Spivey Hall in Atlanta on April 1st, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC on April 5th, and Strathmore in Maryland on May 7th.

Atlanta Braves Searching for Bands to Perform Before 2009 Braves Home Games
The Atlanta Braves are looking for bands who think they have what it takes to energize and entertain thousands of fans at Turner Field before a home Braves game in 2009. Country, rock, pop, cover, or original bands can submit their information for review at www.braves.com/bravesbands.

Music Legend Joins Georgia Academy of Dance & the Performing Arts!
Georgia Academy of Dance & the Performing Arts is the premier performing arts school within our local community offering performing arts education with top professional instructors from around the nation. Joining their staff of performing arts professionals is Dr. Franklin Green, a Pi Kappa Lambda with a major in choral conducting, minor in vocal performance.
In addition to his doctorate of the University of Georgia, Dr. Green obtained his masters from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, majoring in music history and vocal concentration, and his bachelors from the University of Georgia, majoring in music education and vocal concentration and receiving magna cum laude honors.
Throughout his career, Dr. Green has served as a church musician, public school choral director, and college professor around the southeast. He also served on the voice faculty for Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. For over ten years, his choirs have been nationally recognized, singing for state, regional, and national conventions for choral directors.
Before his teaching career, Dr. Green was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the ASO Chamber Chorus under the direction of the well-known, Robert Shaw. Additionally, Dr. Green has been a guest soloist with many regional colleges, universities, and choral societies and is sought after as a judge and clinician.
He currently teaches privately and directs the Georgia Singers. Georgia Singers, Inc. is a Georgia Non-Profit Corporation, which sponsors two community choirs for young women from grade seven through young adults with fifty plus members. Dr. Green is also the Coordinator of the Lexus Scholarships for the Stars program which annually provides $25,000 in college scholarships for future music majors from Fayette County. Additionally, he is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Division of the American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA).
Dr. Franklin Green will begin teaching private voice lessons at GAD & the Performing Arts in January 2009, adding yet another prestige artist and educator to their staff.
GAD & the Performing Arts private voice lessons provide students with a superior learning atmosphere enabling each individual to learn at their own pace. Additionally, their private lessons allow instructors to focus on individual weaknesses and strengths and cater to the student’s learning style. These lessons are excellent opportunities for in-school choral students to enhance their technique and progress at a much faster pace - without the intimidation of a large group setting. Introduction to voice consists of instruction in building foundations that last and developing essential skills for growing voices (ages 6, 7, & 8). Voice lessons, ages 9 & up, involves instruction in building a foundation, developing proper singing techniques, and ensuring the proper use of the voice (posture, breathing, warm-ups, tone, diction, rhythm, etc.)
Additionally, GAD & the Performing Arts provides the highest level of music education with exquisite facilities, private music rooms, and viewing windows. All students will have at least one performance per year. Additionally, intermediate to advanced students may participate in the Music Teachers National Association competitions if selected by the music instructor.

Army Ground Forces Band Ensemble to Play a Free Dixieland Concert at Spivey Hall
The Old Flint River Dixieland Band, and ensemble of the Army Ground Forces Band, will give a free concert in Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall this coming Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 11:15 a.m.

The band performs traditional New Orleans Dixieland music that has survived and flourished for more than a century. Brass, wind, and rhythm instruments will bring a taste of that New Orleans style to Spivey Hall in a free, educational concert.

Fun at the Fred begins with All-Star Lineup for 2009 Summer Concerts
Series Renewals begin January 26
The Fred will be rockin’ this summer with the songs you know and love showcasing beach music, country, pop, rock and more. The Fred, a 2500 seat outdoor amphitheater in Peachtree City will host a six concert series that will span May – August featuring a variety of music that will span the decades .
The six concert series schedule includes the following all-star lineup:
May 1 & 2 Kenny Loggins From Loggins & Messina classics like “Danny’s Song” to signature solo tracks including “Celebrate Me Home” and the Grammy-winning “This Is It”, Kenny Loggins expansive body of work speaks volumes with its warmth and directness.
June 5, 6 Leann Rimes Always mature beyond her age, she earned two Grammy Awards for “Blue”, her 1996 major label debut. Certified multi-platinum, the album has sold 8 million copies and the title track remains one of her signature songs. She followed that impressive bow with a series of best-selling albums and hit singles, (23 total for a combined sales of 15 million units) like the chart-topping “How Do I Live,” the longest running single on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Can’t Fight the Moonlight.”
June 26 & 27 The Beach Boys featuring Mike Love and Bruce Johnston The Beach Boys first rode the waves of success in 1961 with their regional debut hit “Surfin.” By 1996 they had emerged as one of America’s top pop groups by releasing eleven top-10 singles in five year. They were made popular with hits like “Fun, Fun, fun,” “I Get Around,” Help Me Rhonda,” “California Girls” and “Good Vibrations.”
July 17 & 18 The Spinners The Spinners have always made music that is at once timeless and also utterly in tune with the times. They possess a classic group sound and approach which never loses its universal appeal. In the past years they have acquired twelve gold records with their hits climbing to the top of both the pop and R&B charts. A partial list of their songs is “Then Came You”, “Rubberband Man”, “Games People Play” and “I’ll Be Around”.
August 14, 15 Hippiefest featuring Flo and Eddie of the Turtles, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, Brewer and Shipley, Felix Cavaliere of the Rascals and Joey Molland of Badfinger. This three-hour show is jam-packed with talent that will appeal to a wide audience including those who experienced the era as well as those who came later only got to experience the intrigue.
August 21 & 22 Peter Cetera As the lead singer and bassist of Chicago, Cetera wrote some of the biggest hits of the rock and pop music era including “If You Leave Me Now,” “Baby What a Big Surprise,” “You’re the Inspiration,” “Stay the Night,” “Feeling Stronger Every Day,” and “Hard To Say I’m Sorry”.
The price for a series ticket, (all six concerts) is $240 per person for reserved seating and $300 for Gold Seating. A limited number of Picnic Tables are available for $1800 for the series and Gold Tables are $3,000. Existing series ticket holders will be able to renew their tickets from January 26-February 20. New series tickets will go on sale to the public on Saturday, March 7 at the Fred Box Office from 9 a.m – 12 pm. Individual tickets will be available for purchase beginning March 14. Four additional spotlight concerts will be announced by the end of January, which will target various demographic audiences and genres of music. Chicago Jazz Ensemble Comes to Carrollton January 24
Jazz enthusiasts will be dazzled by the second annual “Live Art at the Townsend Center” event featuring The Chicago Jazz Ensemble starring Jon Faddis on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The 21-member Chicago Jazz Ensemble consists of musicians with national recognition, acclaimed Columbia College Chicago faculty and some of the city’s most talented artists. Faddis, conductor, composer and educator known for his intense integrity and humor, was formerly the artistic director of the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band.
The Chicago Jazz Ensemble’s mission is to represent, preserve and promote the innovative traditions of American orchestral Jazz music. Founded in 1965 by distinguished composer and conductor William Russo, the ensemble entered a new phase in its history with the appointment of trumpet virtuoso Faddis as its artistic director.
Faddis has a 30-year history of performing and collaborating with the world’s foremost Jazz artists, including Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. Faddis earned accolades from his close friend and mentor Gillespie, who declared of Faddis, “He’s the best ever, including me!” As a trumpeter, Faddis possesses a virtually unparalleled range, making the practically impossible seem effortless.
Also appearing in Carrollton with this elite group of musicians will be Ignacio Berroa, recognized by many as one of the greatest drummers of our times. Known as the “Afro-Cuban drumming maestro,” Berroa’s numerous contributions to the American music scene has earned him a place among a very selective group of artists known to have set new musical trends for the 20th century.
“Live Art at the Townsend Center,” which started in 2008, was a successful venture into increasing artistic opportunities for UWG and the Carrollton community. Michelle Morgan, Susan Fleck and Claire Cooley, co-chairs of the upcoming Live Art event, said the gala once again brings critically acclaimed artists to the area.
“Each year, we hope to raise the bar of cultural options in the West Georgia region,” Fleck said. “We’re hoping to duplicate the success of Ballet Memphis last year. It was such a positive event and everyone was on such a high. We want to keep it that way and build on that enthusiasm.”
UWG jazz musicians, jazz musicians from the local schools, private schools, homeschools, etc. and adult jazz musicians from the surrounding communities may register to participate in a 90-minute workshop conducted by Faddis at 2:30 p.m. in the third-floor Humanities Building Band Room. First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City will be hosting the Peachtree Jazz Edition in concert on Saturday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This is the fourth concert as part of the church’s 2008-2009 Concert Series season.
Peachtree Jazz Edition is heralded as one of the best jazz bands in Atlanta. This group features an 18-piece band comprised of talented musicians from the greater-Atlanta area. Nintendo’s Wii Music Strikes a Chord with Music Educators
(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nintendo’s new Wii Music™ game is spreading from the family room to the classroom, thanks to newly formed collaborations with select schools and educators. To help inspire students and promote an active appreciation for music, Nintendo is working with teachers to incorporate Wii™ consoles and Wii Music software into their lesson plans to offer teachers a unique tool for creativity and improvisation.
Nintendo’s collaborators in this effort include MENC: The National Association for Music Education, which is recognized as the world’s largest arts education organization and as a teaching resource for all levels from preschool to graduate school. MENC will help teachers in 51 cities across the nation integrate Wii Music into their curricula, making use of the game’s 60-plus instruments and fun array of tutorial exercises in rhythm, tempo and song structure.
“The goal of Wii Music is to inspire people of all ages to enjoy music,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “By partnering with educators and bringing Wii Music into their classrooms, we hope to give students a memorable, hands-on experience that helps them discover their own creative voice.”
The Wii console’s motion-sensing controls allow Wii Music users at any experience level to step up and jam, whether playing solo or as part of a group. Using the wireless Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk™ controllers, players make simple, intuitive movements to strum a guitar, play a trumpet or bang a drum.
“At any grade level, it’s essential to provide students with the tools and encouragement they need to be creative,” said John J. Mahlmann, executive director of MENC. “We look forward to collaborating with Nintendo to drive awareness and advocacy for music education through Wii Music.”

Students also have to use language skills, spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination. We have a school very supportive of the arts and Wii Music has empowered our program even more. Any system that is educational and can add a love of music to children’s lives should be in every classroom.”

Yates Takes Home Big Award
Newnan, Georgia's Jerry Yates came out a big winner at the 2008 Roots Music Association's Award Ceremony, held on November 15th, in San Marcos, Texas.
The ceremony, was part of the World United Music Festival and Radio Conference, presented by the Roots Music Association and the United States Entertainment Forces. The festival and conference were the premier radio and music industry networking events for professionals involved in the music industry, around the globe. The event's focus was on the national and international radio, music industry, and related press, within the worldwide music market, providing a platform, primarily for independent musicians and artists, but including established performers, to gain exposure and be heard.
Although bad weather forced the cancellation of the music festival Saturday night and Sunday, the event was not a total wash out.
Rev. Jerry Yates, a solo Gospel artist, who sings, writes songs, and plays acoustic guitar, with a country blues, rockabilly style, performed Friday afternoon, showcasing his talents before a small, but enthusiastic crowd. However, the big event for Yates came during the award ceremony, which was held in the Embassy Suites Hotel, in San Marcos, when he walked away with the 2008 Roots Music Association's "Gospel Artist of the Year Award"! Other nominees in the "Gospel Category" included Ricky Scaggs and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
"It was absolutely impossible for me to win" Yates said, after the ceremony. "But God is known for doing the impossible, and I know it was only by His grace that I won! I need to hurry and get back home, to see if I'm dreaming" he said.

Chairman Dubs USO Tour 'Smiles Around the World'

Mike Mullen, the nation's top military officer, to call the trip "Smiles Around the World."
The tour started its third day today with shows in Mosul and Al Asad Air Base in Iraq, and ended with a performance here.
At Mosul, more than 1,500 servicemembers trooped into a large fest tent for the show featuring Kid Rock, Kellie Pickler, Lewis Black, Tichina Arnold, Zac Brown, Kathleen Madigan and John Bowman.
In Al Asad, the performers entertained more than 3,000 Marines, sailors, airmen, soldiers and civilians at the soccer field from a stage that Navy Seabees built for the occasion.
The show at Al Asad started with decent temperatures, but once the sun went down, the temperature went south pretty quickly, too. The musicians felt the cold the most, but still kept "pickin' and grinnin'" through a number of songs that brought the house down.
The comedians – led by Lewis Black – clearly were enjoying the energy they were getting from the crowd, and all of the performers were on longer than scheduled. At the end of the show, the servicemembers started a chant of "One more song, one more song, one more song!" Kid Rock, Kellie Pickler and Zac Brown played John Cougar Mellencamp's "Little Pink Houses." The servicemembers all sang the chorus -- "which begins, "Ain't that America?" -- along with the performers.
The show here didn't start until midnight. It originally was scheduled to begin at 8:30, but the plane was late getting in, and then weather forced the group to motorcade from the airport in Kosovo's capital of Pristina to the base. The sound equipment took some time to get to Bondsteel and be set up. Mullen came early, spoke with the servicemembers and passed his personal coin out.
Few members of the mostly National Guard audience left the theater, despite the long wait. "We're sort of forgotten here in Kosovo," one specialist said. "Believe me, we're so pleased to have people like this come and entertain, we'd sit here all night, if necessary."
This is Mullen's second holiday tour.
"'Smiles Around the World' is what I call it," he said during an interview aboard the C-17 taking the troupe to Kosovo. "These performers can relate to the troops, and they appreciate the troops' sacrifices. They know how they feel at this time of year."
During the day, the chairman not only introduced the shows, but also received operational updates in Mosul and in Pristina. Earlier in the morning, he met with leaders of Multinational Corps Iraq at the Al Faw Palace at Camp Victory, outside Baghdad.

Sarah Garcia Chosen to Participate in U.S. Army All-American Marching Band
Sarah Garcia, a senior at Starr's Mill High School, has been chosen to participate in the second annual U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. Representatives of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl traveled to Fayetteville recently to announce Garcia's selection.
As a member of the All-American Marching Band, Garcia will participate in bowl game festivities and march in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl half-time show along with 96 other high school musicians from around the country. The bowl game will be broadcast live by NBC from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on January 3, 2009.
The senior clarinetist is the clarinet section leader of the Starr's Mill High School marching band and has been selected as a Georgia All-State Band member for 5 consecutive years. She is pictured with her parents, Anthony and Elaine Garcia, of Peachtree City.

National Endowment for the Arts Announces First Round of Grants for FY 2009
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) today announced its first round of funding for fiscal year 2009, including Access to Artistic Excellence, Challenge America Fast Track, and Creativity and Aging in America grants, and Creative Writing Fellowships for individuals. Enjoy "The Wonder of Christmas" at First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City
First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City will be hosting a Christmas Concert titled “The Wonder of Christmas” on Sunday, December 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This will be the third of six concerts given during the church’s 2008-2009 concert series season.
An orchestra and choir, along with organist Sam DeCarlo and accompanist Sue Eutermoser, will accompany the program’s festive seasonal works and carols. Talented ensembles and soloists from the First Presbyterian congregation and community will also share Christmas favorites. The orchestra and Chancel Choir will be conducted by Dr. John Odom. The praise band will be led by Jay Akins.
“The Wonder of Christmas” was created by renowned composer David Hamilton. This concert will weave contemporary songs and traditional Christmas carols with biblically based narrations. You will be reminded of the majesty of the Savior's birth. Sentimental heartstrings will be tugged by well-known songs and carols of the Christmas season and the original underscores that depict the many facets of the Christmas story.
This concert is free to the community. A love offering will be taken. Childcare will be available for children ages 4 and younger.

Valdosta State Chamber Singers Perform by Candlelight Sunday, Dec. 7
The Valdosta State Chamber Singers, an elite choral ensemble of 24 singers, will perform holiday programs by candlelight at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, in the grand acoustical stage of west Hall’s rotunda. the joyous occasion will feature renaissance motets, new compositions, and familiar favorites such as “Joy to the world,” “Angels we Have Heard on High,” and “Silent Night.”

Festive Concerts for the Holiday Season
Celebrate the festive spirit of the season with the return of Emory's traditional holiday concerts and performances by student ensembles.
The Emory Jazz Ensemble with director Gary Motley presents a free concert on Dec. 2, at 8 p.m., featuring jazz favorites such as “My Little Suede Shoes” by Charlie Parker, “Watermelon Man” by Herbie Hancock and “Milestones” by Miles Davis.
The Emory Symphony Orchestra welcomes Emory Coca-Cola Artist-in-Residence Katherine Wolfe, violin, performing a free concert on Dec. 4 at 8 p.m., including “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, Vaughan Williams’ “A Lark Ascending” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 1 in C Major.”
The Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta (ECMSA) presents on Dec. 5 in a free Noontime Series concert of solo works for violin by J.S. Bach.
On Dec. 7, at 4 p.m., the Vega String Quartet performs an ECMSA Family Series concert “Father Christmas’ Favorite Music,” where England’s Santa Claus will make a personal appearance to hand out holiday treats.
Emory’s University Chorus and Concert Choir with director Eric Nelson, organist Melissa Plamann, and pianists Lisa Leong and Deborah Thoreson present the “Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols,” on Dec. 5, at 8 p.m. and Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Established in 1935, this candle-lit evening service of choral music and scripture includes readings by special guests from the community.

The Emory Symphony Orchestra welcomes Emory Coca-Cola Artist-in-Residence Katherine Wolfe, violin, performing a free concert on Dec. 4 at 8 p.m., including “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, Vaughan Williams’ “A Lark Ascending” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 1 in C Major.”
The Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta (ECMSA) presents on Dec. 5 in a free Noontime Series concert of solo works for violin by J.S. Bach.

Berry Student Chosen for Georgia’s All-College Band
Three Berry College students are among the 80 college musicians selected to perform with the Georgia Music Educators Association All-College Band. The selected musicians represent a total of 19 colleges around the state including The University of Georgia and Emory University.
Students are nominated by college faculty across Georgia. The final selections are made by a statewide committee with representation from all institutions and instruments. This is the fifth consecutive year that Berry has participated in the event.
The All-College Band will perform at the conclusion of the Georgia Music Educators In-Service Conference, scheduled for Jan. 28-31, 2009, at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. Yellow Jacket Marching Band Set to Play in Macy's Parade
Georgia will be well represented in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as Georgia Tech’s Yellow Jacket Marching Band takes center stage. The group is one of two college bands selected to perform during the traditional kick-off to the holiday season.
The parade will be broadcast live Thursday, November 27, 2008, on NBC from 9:00AM until noon (EST). The Yellow Jacket Marching Band has been informed that they will be marching by the camera at approximately 10:07AM
“With 2008 representing the band’s 100th anniversary, we cannot think of a better way to celebrate than taking part in this traditional holiday event,” says Band Director Chris Moore.
Transporting 360 members plus their instruments is no small task. The group will be transported via eight buses along with one truck loaded with instruments ranging from 30 tubas to 31drums. The band is set leave on Sunday, November 23 for the 800-plus-mile trek.
Established in 1908, the Yellow Jacket Marching Band is one of the oldest such programs in the country. Members of the band are part of a group of more than 1,100 Georgia Tech students who sing, play or study music each semester at a university that offers no undergraduate degrees in music. Band members represent every major and many nations around the world.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is not the first time the band has been in the limelight. Band members appeared at the Kenny Chesney and Sugarland concert during their 2007 summer tour in Atlanta. They also were asked to perform with Keith Urban during his spring concert at Gwinnett Arena earlier this year.

Fayette County Whitewater Chorale Receives Highest State Honor
The Whitewater High School mixed choir has received the highest honor in Georgia. Whitewater High School is in Fayetteville.
The chorale has been invited to perform at the 2009 Georgia Music Educators Association conference in January 2009. A recording of the group was submitted to the association in the spring for consideration to perform at the event. Whitewater is one of only two high school mixed choirs that received an invitation.
“We are so proud of our singers and are happy to offer them this extraordinary musical experience,” says Hannah Beth Potter, assistant director of chorale activities at the school.

Festival of Lessons and Carols November 30 at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City
The Sanctuary Choir of First Presbyterian Church will present A Festival of Lessons and Carols on November 30 at 11:15 am. The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a format of Christian worship service celebrating the birth of Jesus and traditionally followed at Christmas. The story of the fall of man, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in short Bible readings, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns.
The service is based on the format of the traditional service held each Christmas in the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, England. First presented on Christmas Eve in 1918, the festival of Lessons and Carols format was created by Eric Milner-White, whose years as an army chaplain convinced him that the church needed different forms of worship. His original service was adapted from an order drawn up by E.W. Benson (later the Archbishop of Canterbury) who presented a similar service in 1880 in a wooden shed which served as his cathedral in Truro.
Almost immediately, other churches adapted the service for their own use.
The first broadcast of the service from King’s College took place in 1928. It has since been broadcast every year (with the exception of 1930), and there are millions of listeners world wide.

Georgia Tech Launches Center for Music Technology

Several interdisciplinary projects already in progress will be demonstrated today at an exclusive launch event for potential collaborators.
"Our goal is to build an international center for creative and technological research in music that will redefine the way we create, perform, listen to and consume music," says Dr. Gil Weinberg, co-founder and director of the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. "To that end, we brought together top researchers from across campus who together can address current challenges in the field and develop new solutions that cannot be achieved in the framework of a single discipline."
Unlike much current research in music, the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology is committed to bringing new ideas to the market, with applied solutions for businesses and consumers. Researchers are already working on ways to improve existing acoustical instruments, as well as defining new approaches for music making. "One of our new projects, called ZooZ Beat, for example, allows anyone with a cell phone to use expressive gestures to create and share music in a group," explains Weinberg. "Other projects explore concepts like wearable devices for music therapy, audience participation in live performance, robotic musicianship, music as an assistive medium for the visually impaired and computational analysis of music at the signal level." Other research areas include composition, machine listening, materials science, music information retrieval, digital signal processing, design and manufacturing, networked music, music perception, music theory, multimedia development and acoustics.
"It is important to note that the students who work with our faculty members bring with them a wide range of skills and experiences, from the technical to the artistic," stresses Weinberg. "More than half of our students are pursuing a Master of Science in Music Technology degree in a relatively new program at Georgia Tech that encourages students to explore their creativity both technically and musically. We are currently in the process of proposing a PhD degree in Music Technology, which will allow our students to deepen their education in these areas and help develop a strong intellectual backbone for research activities in the Center."

Starr's Mill High School Band Wins and Wins!

Starr's Mill competed against 21 bands from throughout Georgia and achieved Superior ratings in all categories judged. In addition to being named Grand Champion Band, Starr's Mill won the Norman L. Padgett Award for the highest music score of the competition, the Best Woodwinds in Contest award and the highest score in Open Class competition. The Color Guard took third place honors in Open Class competition.
After a short period of celebration, the band took to the practice field in preparation for their next competition. On October 11, the Panther Pride competed in the Marching Warrior Invitational sponsored by Gordon Central High School in Calhoun, Georgia.

The band was awarded their second Grand Champion trophy of the season along with 2nd place Drum Majors and Auxiliary in Open Class competition, 1st place Majorette in Open Class and Gold Division (AAA and Open Class bands) and 1st place band in Open Class and Gold Division.
The band will travel to Jacksonville State University in Alabama on Saturday, October 25 to compete against high school bands from throughout the south. The Starr's Mill Band is directed by Mr. Scott King and assisted by Dr. Andrew Poor.

Family-Friendly Comedian is ‘Just Pure Laughs’ at PTC First Presbyterian October 19
First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City will be hosting family-friendly comedian and worship leader Dan McGowan in a concert titled “Just Pure Laughs” on Sunday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This will be the second concert given during the church’s 2008-2009 Concert Series season.
Dan McGowan is known for delighting audiences of all ages with his observational humor, parody songs, and interactive hilarity. Dan was most recently seen auditioning last season on NBC’s Last Comic Standing which led to his opening for Kathleen Madigan, national touring comedian and judge for Last Comic Standing.
In addition to being a clean comedian, Dan has been serving churches in the area of Creative Worship for over 30 years. Currently, he serves as Music and Worship Director at Faith Church outside Denver, Colorado.
This concert is free to the community. A love offering will be taken. Childcare will be available for children ages 4 and younger.

Spivey Hall Opens 2008/2009 Jazz Series, October 17
World famous Spivey Hall, on the campus of Clayton State University, is preparing to open its 2008/2009 Jazz Series on Friday, Oct. 17 with an 8:15 p.m. performance by the Kenny Barron Trio.
Lauded as "one of the top jazz pianists in the world" (Los Angeles Times) and "the most lyrical pianist of our time" (Jazz Weekly), Kenny Barron is a master poet of jazz piano with an unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences. A major headliner appearing at leading jazz venues and festivals internationally, he has been named "Best Jazz Pianist" by the Jazz Journalists Association four years in a row. His outstanding recordings have been showered with honors, including eight Grammy nominations for his featured recordings on the Verve label.

The sole winner of the 2001 Young Concert Artists European Auditions in Leipzig, and the first guitarist ever to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York, Croatian guitarist Belinic is "a genius, a poet, a super-sensitive musician" (SanDiego.com) Belinic has given recitals in New York at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall and Merkin Concert Hall and in Boston at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. As concerto soloist, he has appeared with the Phoenix Symphony, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's in New York.
His Spivey Hall program will include: J.S. BACH/Belinic Prelude, Fugue & Allegro in E-flat Major, BWV 998; SOR Introduction and Variations on "Marlborough s'en va-t-en guerre"; MANGORÉ Vals No. 3, Opus 8, Julia Florida, Cueca; CAGALJ Four Dances for Guitar; BROUWER Sonata; and LAURO Two Venezuelan Folk Dances.

UWG: Faculty Music Concert Celebrates A DAY
In the mood for a little music? The University of West Georgia will present its annual A DAY Music Faculty Concert on Monday, Oct. 13, at 8:15 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.
A donor reception will be held before the concert in the Townsend Center at 7:30 p.m. The events are free and the community is invited to attend. Dr. Kevin Hibbard, chair and professor of music, is coordinating the event.
“The annual A DAY Music Faculty Concert showcases the spectacular talent of our faculty as a musical gift to the community,” said Hibbard. “We perform for A DAY to show our appreciation of the wonderful support that the community provides to the university.”
“The music faculty spends all day long teaching. They lead rehearsals, research, write and supervise student teachers, yet they still find time to keep their performance chops in tip top order. This sets a superb example for our students.”
This year’s concert will feature two new faculty: Peter Mueller, a trombonist who plays in the Macon Symphony, and Dr. Reverie Berger, a mezzo-soprano with extensive operatic credentials.
Performances for the 2008 concert include a piano duet performed by Jan Adams, instructor of piano, and Dr. Dawn McCord, assistant professor of music education; a violin and piano duet featuring Dr. Carol Gingerich, associate professor of music, and Dr. Elizabeth Kramer, assistant professor of music; and a trio led by Dr. Daniel Bakos, a jazz studies and music professor.
Also performing are Dr. Larry Frazier, a bass singer and professor of music; Melanie Fuller, an instructor of flute; Michael Lanier, instructor of trumpet, guest Terry Lowry, conductor and pianist.
The community is invited to enjoy the musical talents of West Georgia’s faculty and staff. UWG students benefit from scholarships obtained through the generosity of donors who contribute to the university’s annual A DAY campaign.

2008 Gospel Choice Awards Selects Emmanuel Praise Church for Its Church of the Year Award

Since then, Emmanuel Praise Church has impacted the lives of millions of people through the founding of Angel Food Ministries. Each month, hundreds of thousands of families across the United States are impacted by this food ministry.
