Army Ground Forces Band and Guest Soloist to Perform Salute to Pavarotti

The U.S. Army Forces Command’s Army Ground Forces Band will perform a concert in honor of opera’s great lyric tenor Luciano Pavarotti at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City, Ga., Aug. 7 at 7 p.m.

World-class guest tenor Sgt. 1st Class Antonio Giuliano will help make the evening a memorable one.

With selections from Verdi’s Aida, Puccini’s La Boheme, Ponchielle’s La Gioconda and Verdi’s Rigoletto, as well as overtures from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Wagner’s Lohengrin, the evening should prove to be not only a tribute to Pavarotti but also a celebration of some of classical music’s greatest moments.

On Sep. 6, 2007, Pavarotti lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 71. Under the direction of Capt. Domingos Robinson and 1st Lt. Dae Kim, the Army Ground Forces Band has put together a program that honors his extraordinary life as one of classical music’s most popular personalities and talents. The program includes six of Pavarotti’s favorite arias from various operas.

In a culture where opera music is often regarded as a musical form for the elite, Pavarotti managed to popularize opera and become a household name. Pavarotti certainly made a lasting impression on young Antonio Giuliano, who bought two Pavarotti albums in 1982 when he was a high school student in Pensacola, Fla. Now Sgt. 1st Class Giuliano sings with The U.S. Army Chorus.

Giuliano has had some memorable performances of his own. He has appeared in operas, concerts and recitals throughout the United States and Europe. As a senior vocalist and soloist with The United States Army Chorus, he has performed for heads of state, royalty and presidents worldwide. At the funeral services for President Ronald Reagan, he sang an a cappella version of "Amazing Grace," President Reagan's favorite hymn.

“Since 1988, I have been serving my country while using my God-given voice to represent our great Army and our nation as a musical ambassador,” he says. “I am an American Soldier. My mission is to serve as a musical ambassador of the American combat Soldier -- instilling pride in our troops, promoting a spirit of patriotism within our nation, and sharing a universal vision of peace, liberty and freedom through music.”

As one of only three Army bands with a national touring mission, the Army Ground Forces Band has traveled throughout the United States, performing at local, regional and national events.
The band also performs internationally when directed. Last year the Army Ground Forces Band traveled to Kuwait, playing five concerts for hundreds of Soldiers and other service members who were deployed there in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

RSMS Symphonic Band Selected to Perform at Distinguished Event

The 2008-09 school year is just beginning for Fayette County students but one group of students at Rising Starr Middle is already hard at work.

The Rising Starr Middle Symphonic Band found out last spring that they have been invited to perform at the 62nd annual Midwest International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago, IL in December 2008. The Rising Starr Symphonic Band, under the direction of Steven Tyndall, is one of only three middle school bands chosen from the United States and 33 other countries. The band’s 2008 performance will mark the second time Rising Starr has participated in this prestigious gathering.

The Midwest Conference began in 1946 as an opportunity for bands to come together to preview newly published music. It has evolved into one of the most important and highly regarded gatherings of musical educators in the field. Both students and directors are offered opportunities to attend educational clinics and performances of a wide variety of musical ensembles.

The Rising Starr Symphonic Band will be joined by guest conductors Scott King, band director at Starr’s Mill High, David Walters, director emeritus at Jacksonville State University and Dr. Andrew Poor, associate director of bands at Starr’s Mill High. Dr. Poor will conduct an original arrangement entitled “Acceptance,” commissioned by the Rising Starr Band for the Midwest performance. Emily Tyndall of Columbus State University will be the featured guest soloist.

The symphonic band members have already begun rehearsals and fundraising for their upcoming trip. The public is invited to come show their support for these talented young musicians at their first major fundraiser on August 16. The band will host a yard sale in the parking lot of PTC OB/GYN at 120 Clover Reach from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many band families have contributed to the yard sale and there will be treasures and bargains galore.

Songwriting Contest for GIs Yields 18 Winners

A Marine in Fallujah pens a song about standing watch. A sailor stationed in Hawaii scribbles a lullaby for his son while in the Iraqi desert. A soldier raps into a tape recorder to entertain his unit. Songwriters like these servicemembers were among the many who submitted their original songs to this year's "Songs From the Soul of Service" songwriting contest.

Now in its third year, the amateur songwriting contest is a collaborative effort between the Dallas Songwriter Association and the Defense Department's America Supports You program, which highlights corporate and grassroots support for U.S. servicemembers and their families.

Judges select winners and runners-up in each of 18 categories, which include Afghanistan and Iraq, country, hip-hop, inspirational, instrumental and pop/rock. They then select three of the category winners for grand prizes.

The top three songs for 2008 are:

-- First Place: "Ask Me To" by Air Force Capt. Steven Wilson, which took top pop/rock honors;

-- Second Place: "If Tomorrow Were a Dream" by Army National Guard Spc. Greg Pritchard, which was the contest's top country song; and

-- Third Place: "I Can't Wait to Love You" by Jill Charles, wife of Army Staff Sgt. Robert Charles, the top song in the inspirational category.

"Every military conflict from the American Revolution to the Civil War to the first Gulf War has spawned music that reflected the moods, emotions and sentiments of the nation's fighting men and women," said William Brown, Dallas Songwriter Association board member and committee chairman for Songs From the Soul of Service.

"Songs From the Soul of Service serves to capture some of this history," he continued, "while providing recognition to talented songwriters and diversion and entertainment to participants and nonparticipants alike."

Wilson, who earned the top grand prize, said his own life provides his songwriting inspiration.

"Over the years, writing music has been so autobiographical," he said. "It's so honest and personal. I think this contest truly personalizes the image of the military. It shows civilians that as 'the troops' we represent so much more than uniforms and duty. This contest gives us the chance to showcase what might otherwise remain silent or be forgotten."

The contest is open exclusively to amateur songwriters currently serving in the U.S. military and those currently inactive due to injury or disability suffered after the start of the war in Afghanistan. Eligible participants may submit songs on behalf of an immediate family member, a fallen comrade or a fallen comrade's immediate family member.

Brown said he thinks the contest is an excellent outlet for servicemembers.

"These songs provided respite, unit bonding and an expressive outlet during trying times," he explained. "In some cases, these songs will transcend their times and become permanent fixtures in the nation's patriotic songbook."

Wilson, along with the other winners of each category, will be included on a compilation CD provided to radio and music industry professionals, as well as to the contest participants. The first-place grand prize includes a weekend stay at the Gaylord Texan Hotel.

Public events to showcase the winning songs and songwriters are in the planning stages. The events will culminate with a concert at the end of the year, headlined by well-known recording artists.

Daniel Pyle to Open 2008/2009 Spivey Hall Season

Dr. Daniel Pyle, adjunct instructor of Music Appreciation and Harpsichord for the Clayton State University Department of Music, and music director/organist for The Church of Our Savior in Atlanta, will open the 2008/2009 Spivey Hall season on Saturday, Sept. 13, with an organ recital presented by the Department of Music

The free concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will feature music of Northern Germany and Scandinavia by Baroque master Dieterich Buxtehude and Commotio by 20th-century Danish composer Carl Nielsen.

As an organist, Pyle has performed in the Netherlands, at the Universities of Kansas and Alabama and LSU, and elsewhere in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Kansas. As a harpsichordist, he has played with baroque ensembles in Paris, Amsterdam, the Utrecht Early Music Festival, London’s St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the Boston Early Music Festival; and throughout the American Southeast.

The regular harpsichordist and a member of the board of directors for the newly-founded Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, Pyle’s recording of Elizabethan music on a lautenwerk, The Maidens Song, is available on the Gasparo label (GSCD 334).

Pyle holds bachelors and masters degrees in organ performance and music history from the University of Alabama, where he was a student of Warren Hutton. His doctorate is from the Eastman School of Music.

Rock Band Sevendust Performs for Bagram Troops

Modern-rock band Sevendust put on a performance like no other for servicemembers here July 12 at the final stop on their first United Service Organizations tour.

Although the band is not known for playing acoustic sets, they still managed to put out a diverse sound that left rock fans wanting more.

"I never thought anybody could 'jam out' acoustically like they did," said Army Sgt. Mark Decker, of Company B, 101st Airborne Division Special Troops Battalion.

After the performance, Sevendust let a soldier from the crowd come up on stage and smash a guitar. They also gave him one of their guitars and gave other servicemembers a set of bongos and another guitar, practically giving away their entire set of instruments.

"I think they were awesome," said Air Force Capt. Vanessa Mahan, 455th Aerial Expeditionary Wing. "It's been a while since we've had a hardcore band here, so it's kind of refreshing. "

The band gave thanks and saluted the servicemembers for serving in the military.

"If it wasn't for you guys over here, [the Taliban] would be over there, [in the United States]," Lajon "LJ" Witherspoon, Sevendust's lead singer, said during the performance.

The band stuck around to ensure everyone who wanted an autograph, a free copy of their new CD or a picture with the band got one.

The members of Sevendust said they plan on doing another USO tour in the future.

"This, to us, has been the best thing that's ever happened in our lives," Witherspoon said. "As soon as you guys will have us back, we'll be back."

Jazz Night at The High Museum July 18th

In partnership with the National Black Arts Festival, this all night jam session will feature jazz pianist Tyrone Jackson and his quartet in the Robinson Atrium from 5 to 10 p.m. Jackson performs an eclectic blend of classic and contemporary jazz, drawing on his skills in traditional, Latin and fusion jazz.

Latin jazz band Rio Negro will then perform from 10 p.m. until 12 midnight, infusing a touch of salsa, merengue, and reggaetón into their unique jazz sound.

Voices Announces Season

This week, Voices announced its plans through the end of 2009. Their season has been restructured and will be presenting four events in a two-year cycle. “Since our first concert in 2006, we have consistently been told that we should have more events through out the year. So we have gone ahead and planned our season to include more events in a season that will be spread through the end of 2009,” explained Ms. Ugarte.

Voices will be presenting a series of intimate events in September 2008, December 2008 and March 2009, preceding its full scale production in September of 2009, “Mist of Night and Moon.” “There is definitely something to be said about an intimate setting,” explained Ms. Ugarte. “It has a different feel to it. It is like getting submerged into what is going on on stage and somehow being a part it and the music.” Voices will continue to present an eclectic selection of music, covering varied genres and styles that will be incorporated in the different productions. As the title suggests, there is a flavor of mystery and haunt to the theme and Voices Artistic Director promises you are certain to hear “wonderfully haunting melodies.”

Zaphyra will be returning and The Southern Nights Chorale will be joining as well. “We are thrilled to have the Southern Nights Chorale as part of the upcoming productions. They will certainly add a wonderful dimension to the concerts.” Zaphyra has some surprises coming up that will soon be announced as well as other talent to be showcased. Alex Lattimore Releases Promise - Legendary Café 290 Hosts CD Release Party

Velvety vocalist Alex Lattimore has been around the world and has returned home sweet home for a local tour of venues. The multi-talented musician was honored with international success in both South Africa and Japan while touring with The Ananda Project, and is ready to celebrate the independent release of his debut solo CD, Promise. A series of local concerts will expose Atlanta audiences to this International phenomenon. The famous Café 290 will host a CD Release Party for Lattimore on July 26th.

Originally from Chicago, Lattimore’s musical journey began for him as a child, when he prepared for his illustrious career by performing with groups such as the Chicago Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Roosevelt University Jazz Band, and the University of Chicago Chamber Orchestra. Relocation to Atlanta led Lattimore to lend his talents as horn player and vocalist with many local, national and international acts. Face of Defense: Soldier's Music Carries Positive Messages

He has the fast-flowing lips of a rap artist whose lyrics don't stumble. His songs tell stories instead of just describing hanging emotions. He rhymes with passion and recites his own words as if he were creating them on the spot.

"You know, I like to tell stories with my music, that's the thing," Army Master Sgt. Isaac Alexis, a Houston native, said. "Stories will capture people. ... Songs work best when there's something that falls in a role that people can see in, something that people can relate to, ... because then they know somebody went through what they went through."

On stage, Alexis goes by Abcd, pronounced "Absidy." The letters stand for Ambitious Behavior, Confident and Disciplined -- characteristics Alexis said he values and shows when performing his music.

Around Camp Victory and Camp Liberty, Alexis attends and even hosts open-mic events and contests at Morale, Welfare and Recreation centers. His main goal through music, he said, is to tell stories that make people want to rethink and improve their lives. He said he understands that rap music often evokes values that aren't constructive, but that he wants his lyrics to evoke more than fame, sex or violence.

"If you really want to get something across to people, music is the way to make it happen," he said. "A lot of my songs are positive, ... trying to make change in someone's life."

His music promotes ideas such as taking care of one's spouse, maintaining a commitment to service, discouraging youth from joining gangs and becoming involved in the church, among others.

His first album is titled, "Soldier for Life." He said he's served in the Army for 18 years and feels as if his whole life revolves around being a soldier. He served as a drill sergeant in Fort Knox, Ky., as an instructor at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, as a gunner and as a team leader. He has been stationed in Hawaii and South Korea, and at Fort Campbell, Ky., Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort Drum, N.Y.

Now is on his third deployment, Alexis leads troops as the noncommissioned officer in charge of Team Hunter under Task Force Vigilant, a unit that conducts presence patrols around Camp Victory. His team also secures and manages an entry control point with Ugandan soldiers.

"Here, you see soldiers who work hard all the time," Alexis said. "It's the reason why we're here."

Alexis has been writing music since he was a private in the early 1990s, he said, but it was during his second deployment, from 2004 to 2005, that he realized his music touched people. After his performances at MWR events, Alexis had audience members come to him and tell him how much his lyrics touched them. He's even seen people cry during his performance of "We Gotta Go," a song about soldiers leaving their homes to serve in Iraq.

"That's an emotional song for people," he said. "When I performed that song, [other musicians] moved closer to the stage, and when I got done, there was a whole line of performers up there who hugged me on the way out."

Those types of reactions, Alexis said, make him realize his music has more than volume; it has impact.

Following his second deployment, Alexis taught at the New Mexico Military Institute and would visit local middle schools to give inspirational speeches and perform songs to kids in danger of being swallowed up by gangs. With a song titled "Think on Your Own," he encouraged the youth to rethink their commitment to violence. There, he saw former gang members attend the church where Alexis worshiped with his wife, Darla, who sings gospel music.

"Definitely powerful," he said about the experience. "I'm not going to give myself credit for that. You know, it was the Lord, since he pretty much guided me to do everything I did. To see them actually get out of the gang and get a job and try to live right, ... that's great. And that's what I wanted to see."

Since then, Alexis wrote songs and performed for special events such as boxing matches and redeployment ceremonies. He organized concerts, performed for cadets at the military institute, sang at a city council meeting, helped his church reach out to his community, opened for rap artist Lil' Flip, and organized other music events. He said he's even sold more than 3,000 CDs on his own, out of the back of his truck.

During this deployment, he said, he hopes to revise about 30 of his songs and compile at least one more CD. He also has shifted some of his music toward gospel singing because of rap music's image. Most importantly, he's made a commitment to writing clean lyrics to keep his messages pure.

"It's definitely for people's entertainment, but at the same time, [audiences] are getting messages that can have an influence on their life."

Montreux Jazz Festival Announces Alexandria Jackkson as Atlanta Representative for Competition

MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ALEXANDRIA JACKSON AS THE ATLANTA REPRESENTATIVE IN THE MONTREUX JAZZ VOCAL COMPETITION 2008

Since 1967, the world’s greatest jazz singers have graced the stages of the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The opportunity to perform at this premiere jazz event and network with some of the best jazz artists requires hard work and a commitment to the genre that so few are afforded. This prompted Claude Nobs, the Montreux Jazz Festival founder and director, to create an international voice competition for emerging professional jazz vocalists. Competition organizers receive entries from over fifty different countries. In the spring, around fifteen vocalists are selected to take part in the semi-finals and finals at the Montreux Jazz Festival held in Switzerland. On July 6 - 10, artists representing over fifty countries will perform in front of a jury of professionals and a discerning international audience. The representative for the City of Atlanta for the Montreux Jazz Voice Competition 2008 will be Alexandra Jackson.

Although Alexandra Jackson was born in Atlanta into a family of politicians (daughter of former Mayor of Atlanta Maynard Jackson) and civil rights activists, she prefers to do her advocating for social justice-and love-through her music. The 24 year old began appreciating music while just a toddler. At 4, she began what would become ten years of classical training and two years of jazz piano. Throughout high school, she was an outstanding performer in music and drama. After singing with the school’s jazz band, she decided to major in jazz instead of drama. Four years later, she graduated from the prestigious Studio Music and Jazz Vocal program at the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Music degree with a minor in Music Business. After graduation, Jackson performed in the Florida Grand Opera’s production of AIDA. She also sang back up for Gloria Estefan in the opening gala for the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts in Miami. Alexandra was a featured performer for the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival in Atlanta produced by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs.

I am all too aware of the huge responsibility this is as I will be representing Atlanta, my birthplace,” says Alexandra Jackson. “I’ve followed the Montreux Jazz Festival since high school and have always wanted to go as an observer. Graceland Announces Plans for Elvis Week, August 9-17, 2008

BUSINESS WIRE--Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. (EPE) a CKX, Inc. company (NASDAQ: CKXE), is planning for a special Elvis Week, the annual Elvis celebration at Graceland, the late superstar’s home in Memphis, August 9-17. My husband Greg and I went to three concerts this weekend. Yep, three. The great thing about these concerts is they were all in Fayette County and all were fantastic! Two showcased local talent, the third was a Kenny Rogers concert at the Fred in Peachtree City.

What an eclectic musical weekend we had!

First we heard the Southern Nights Chorale perform at the First Baptist Church in Peachtree City Friday night. Southern Nights is a precision a cappella men’s select chorus. It was formed in 2004 by J. D. Holmes. The group has performed at the Governor’s mansion, sung the National Anthem to kick off a Braves game at the Atlanta stadium, and sung at numerous church and civic events.

We were treated to favorite tunes to include Danny Boy, Ave Maria, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Georgia On My Mind and When the Saints Go Marchin’ In. Darlene Simpson Ware impressed the crowd when she sang Summertime and Don’t Rain on My Parade. Simpson Ware has sung in an assortment of productions with the Atlanta Opera Company’s Chorus and sung with Robert Goulet in South Pacific at the Fox.

Two fun songs brought laughter. Steve Morris took the Song “Little Ol’ Lady” and re-wrote the lyrics. The “new” song, Little Ol’ Lady from Peachtree City included a “little ol’ lady” in a “golf cart” zipping back and forth across the front of the pews! The Manly Men Extravaganza also had the audience laughing as the guys cut up with each other, showing off their “manliness”.

On Saturday we say two concerts that couldn’t have been more different! We went from one end of the musical spectrum to the other.

At 5 p.m. we were sitting in the pews of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. Titled “An Evening of Vocal Artistry Concert Directed by Rick Massengale” we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. We had both heard Rick playing piano and singing in “Those Two Guys” duo and the “Rick Massengale Quintet” so we were expecting something along those lines. Were we ever wrong! Mr. Massengale is an extremely talented tenor AND baritone.

We were awed by the phenomenal talents of the six artists who shared the stage. If we closed our eyes it would be easy to think we were on Broadway! The repertoire ranged from well-known popular tunes to those that possibly only opera buffs would recognize. Kim Bowers-Rheay, Brent Davis, Joan Aycock, Frank Green, Bill Killmeier and Rick Massengale chose their favorite songs for the event.

After shaking hands and talking with the artists for a few minutes, we zipped down to Peachtree City to see Kenny Rogers. We’ve both seen Rogers a number of times and he always has a good concert. However, I’d have to say that this may have been one of his best. His two twin four-year old sons and wife joined him on stage at one point. The two boys were obviously used to being on stage as they sang a song for the ooohing audience. Later Rogers called two fans up on stage and presented them with a framed arrangement of his platinum records. The pair had been to well over a thousand of his concerts!

If I’m ever treated to a Rogers concert again, I’m going to make sure my husband and I sit front and center stage. Rogers picked one lucky gentleman from the front and tossed money at him for every hit song he recognized. Of course, the guy recognized a lot of tunes!

The weekend of music was fantastic. It also highlighted how much hidden talent we have in Fayette County. I can’t help but wonder how many people I talk to each day have talents unknown to me.

Four-day Course on Digital Recording Taught by Music Producer John Keane Offered Through UGA’s Music Business Program

Respected Athens music producer and engineer John Keane will teach a series of four-day workshops at the University of Georgia on the essentials of using Digidesign’s Pro Tools, the music industry standard for digital recording.

Registration is under way for the next session, which begins Monday, Aug. 18.

The continuing education course will be based on Keane’s popular book, The Musician’s Guide to Pro Tools, which provides a strong foundation in the basics of Pro Tools for home recordists and aspiring audio engineers and producers.

Keane has worked on numerous gold and multi-platinum albums, and his Athens studios have hosted a variety or recording artists, such as R.E.M., Indigo Girls, Drivin’N’Cryin and Widespread Panic. He began using Pro Tools in 1991 and has written two editions of The Musician’s Guide to Pro Tools.

Chad Wilkes, tour manager of successful artists such as Blink 182 and Bubba Sparxxx, took part in the first session of the Pro Tools workshop held last March. “John puts the vast world of Pro Tools in simple, easy-to-understand words and practice,” Wilkes said. “His knowledge, patience, and hands-on approach make the complete novice feel comfortable in the area of digital recording. Anyone who has thought about diving into digital recording should take this opportunity to learn in a relaxed environment from a true music professional and legend.”

“John teaches valuable, real-world techniques for recording and editing audio,” said Keith Perissi, program coordinator for UGA’s Music Business Program. “For those interested in understanding the full potential of Pro Tools, it’s a great introduction to the system and software.”

The workshop is scheduled for two sessions in Athens -- Aug. 18-27 and Nov. 3-12 -- at UGA’s Caldwell Hall, where the Terry College of Business houses the Music Business Program’s lab. In addition, the workshop will be offered once in Atlanta at the Terry Executive Education Center from Sept. 23 to Oct. 2. Chandra Currelly is all set to wow the crowd with her improvisational vocal stylings on July 13th. As the former lead vocalist for the SOS Band, Ms. Currelly has plenty of hits on her musical resume. In addition to pop chart success, she has explored success in other genres, including gospel, as well as acting and writing. Chandra has received numerous award nominations including an Atlanta gospel choice (best female vocalist), Helen Hayes (slam!), NAACP (Hot Mikado) and Suzie Bass (rejoice!). Her smooth, soulful, inspiration sound has its own category, one Chandra herself calls “urspijazz”, an extraordinary potpourri of urban, spiritual and jazz musical elements.

Singer and keyboardist Christopher Lewis takes the stage on August 24th. A prolific career songwriter, Lewis has penned numerous gospel jazz hits, including “Delivered”, a number-one single in 1996. Lewis nurtured his musical aspirations by singing in the church choir from age 10 and eventually moving on to quartet harmonies, directing, and pursuing a musical career writing heartfelt lyrics. Eloquent and moving, Lewis attributes his style to old-school influences such as Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke and newer artists Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Fred Hammond. Lewis believes his God-given musical purpose is “to melodiously articulate dreams, desires, hope, and love”.

The High welcomes Detroit born Guitarist/Composer Dan Baraszu for June’s Friday Jazz. Baraszu has been playing guitar for over 25 years. His major influences include guitarists Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny and John Scofield as well as other instrumentalists like Bill Evans, Horace Silver, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker. He received his Bachelors degree from the renowned Berkley College of Music, where he majored in Jazz Composition and Arranging. In addition, he also received his Masters degree from the University of Miami with a major in Jazz Pedagogy.

Held on the third Friday of every month, Friday Jazz includes live musical performances, art-making activities and gallery tours. During Friday Jazz, a live model—in costume—will be positioned in the galleries for patrons and visitors to see and capture with pencil and paper. The 2008 Atlanta Jazz Festival Wraps Up At Woodruff Park

On Thursday, September 21, 1978, the Atlanta Free Jazz Festival began with opening ceremonies at the Central City Park Amphitheater. The city evolved into a vibrant metropolis and the jazz festival evolved with it. Thirty one years have passed and the Atlanta Jazz Festival has come full circle, the Atlanta Free Jazz Festival became the Atlanta Jazz Festival and Central City Park became Woodruff Park. This year the festival celebrated its 31st anniversary with its original host, Ernest Gregory, in one of its original locations, Woodruff Park, and a legendary line-up that included artists from the original roster, Joe Jennings and Howard Nicholson’s Lifeforce and Ojeda Penn Experience.

To truly celebrate Atlanta, the 2008 Atlanta Jazz Festival incorporated the theme, 31 Years |31 Days | Atlanta, which promoted Atlanta’s cultural scene. In his 1977 election, Mayor Jackson said, “Jazz music is America’s only original art form, and I think Atlanta, with its growing reputation as an international center of the arts and education, has both the opportunity and the responsibility to promote an art form whose roots are indigenous to the South.”

Though 31 years have passed, the City of Atlanta still has a commitment to spotlighting jazz in the city. The festival exposed jazz aficionados and ordinary citizens to the great things the city of Atlanta has to offer and allowed them to visit some of the best restaurants, nightclubs and concert venues all in the name of jazz. The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs expanded the successful 31 Days of Jazz with the addition of the Neighborhood Jazz Series. The series highlighted the explosion of culture in three of Atlanta’s eclectic neighborhoods, Castleberry Hills, Virginia Highlands, and Midtown culminating with The Atlanta Jazz Festival over Memorial Day Weekend, May 24th through May 26th, 2008, in Woodruff Park. Nearly 80,000 people came out and enjoyed the Neighborhood Jazz Series, 31 Days of Jazz and the Memorial Day Celebration.

“Jazz music, created over 100 years ago in the alleys and halls of the poor and the often disenfranchised, transcends cultural barriers and unites people around the world in its beauty,” said Mayor Shirley Franklin. This was an incredible year for the Atlanta Jazz Festival and having the event at Woodruff Park provided festival lovers of all creeds and colors with the chance to see a different side of Atlanta and heightened their cultural experience. Since the festival’s beginning, there has been an explosion of interest in junior high and high schools and winners of the Youth jazz band competition were able to open the festival each day and festival attendees were able to sample the sounds of the Future of Jazz Competition winners. Festival attendees enjoyed performances by international sensation Serenata Band, the celebrated Gordon Vernick and the GSU Faculty Jazztet, and young gun Mike Phillips to name a few. "Local people want the festival to stay around and the local artists want to express themselves," said Ron James of Ron James and the Truth. “I am so happy to be a part of this year’s festival.” With vendors and restaurants providing food, interactive games and festivities for all ages, this 3-day celebration proved to be fun for the entire family and was the perfect place to be on Memorial Day Weekend.

The chancel choir of Decatur Presbyterian Church (DPC) is an auditioned ensemble, composed of volunteer and professional singers. Ridge Davis to Perform at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church

Ridge Davis will present his senior flute recital at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church on Sunday, May 25, at 2:00 p.m.

Ridge will just have graduated “with distinction” from Whitewater High School on Friday, but his list of accomplishments is already long. He has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony of Emory University since 2004. For four years he was selected for GMEA All-State Orchestra and Band. He won concerto competitions sponsored by three different orchestras. He was awarded scholarships by Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (twice). He was first-place winner in the inaugural Lexus Scholarship for the Stars. In 2006 he was selected to appear on the National Public Radio show, From the Top. At Whitewater he was a member of National Honor Society and Beta Club. In the fall he will be a student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

Ridge’s teacher, Christina Smith, Principal Flute of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, will perform with him on Sunday. His accompanist will be Peter Marshall, a piano professor at Georgia State University. His recital repertoire includes works by Fauré, Messiaen, Widor, Bozza, and Frank Martin, as well as by living composers Robert Muczynski and Henri Dutilleux.

The public is invited. The church is at the corner of Highway 54 and Peachtree Parkway.

4th Annual Friends & Family Concert

The Southern Nights Chorale will present its 4th Annual Friends & Family Concert on Friday evening, June 20th. This year’s performance will be held at Peachtree City First Baptist Church, 208 Willowbend Road off Hwy. 54.

The chorale will present perennial favorites and showcase new songs for the 2007-08 Season, including “Georgia on my Mind,” “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In,” Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” plus a musical extravaganza that is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser.

Spivey Hall Young Artists and Children’s Choir to Perform this Weekend

The Spivey Hall Young Artists and the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir will be performing this coming weekend on the campus of Clayton State University.

Performances will be held in Spivey Hall on Friday, May 16 at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 17 (3 p.m.) and Sunday May 18 (also 3 p.m.) Admission for all three shows is $20 per person.

Starting on May 16, the Spivey Hall Young Artists’ spring concert showcases the achievements of the Young Artists, who will cap off their year with a program that includes performances with the Spivey Hall Children's Choir. The Young Artists sing with spirit and beauty under the direction of Craig Hurley and are accompanied by Steven Wooddell.

Dr. Martha Shaw will then conduct the Children's Choir performances on May 17 and May 18, bringing their year and the 2007/2008 Spivey Series to a close with two wonderful concerts -- demonstrating once again why the Spivey Hall Children's Choir Program under the direction of Shaw and accompanist Judy Mason enjoys an international reputation for artistic excellence. Last year Lindee Link, age 12 at the time, wowed everyone at the Peachtree City Veterans Day event. Since then I've heard her sing a number of times and each time she seems to get just a bit better. Pops in the Park and Pizza n' Pops!

The Peachtree Wind Ensemble will perform at a "Pops in the Park" Concert at Senoia City Park in downtown Senoia on May 16 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will also feature the East Coweta High School and Lee Middle School bands. The Peachtree Wind Ensemble is made up of adult volunteer musicians from throughout the southside area. Any adult who plays an instrument or used to play an instrument and would like to play with a group again is invited to come and have fun making music. Can A Music Video Change The World?

A band, a song, a website, and hundreds possibly thousands of music lovers worldwide will soon join forces to produce a user-generated music video about taking their "Leap of Faith."

What is a "Leap of Faith?" First, it is an inspirational song by Indie rock band Kindred Souls that is about overcoming obstacles and achieving personal triumphs.

"The song is about saying to yourself, 'I believe in you!' It means taking a great leap towards believing in yourself and what you can accomplish," says Kindred Souls singer-songwriter Jeff Rafferty.

Kindred Souls joined forces with international media social network website www.fotki.com to ask people to share photographs of their "Leap of Faith" - whatever that means to them. Fotki.com is based in 215 countries. This is an opportunity to collaborate on producing a video with people around the globe including photographers, proud parents and grandparents, students, athletes, performers, and non-profits.

Playing in clubs ranging from Asbury Park's Stone Pony to New York's Knitting Factory, Kindred Souls is an all-original rock-n-roll band whose music has shades of blues, jazz, R&B, funk, and soul. The band features bassist Stan Quincy Adams, guitarists Ted Heman and Jeff Samet, and drummer Paul Lavenhar.

Fayette Middle School's Cub Chorus Takes First Place!

Spring Concert May 15th at Sams Auditorium

Many of Fayette Middle School’s 7th and 8th grade chorus students recently returned from a 4-day trip to Orlando, Florida. The Cub Chorus performed at the The MusicFest competition in Orlando. The Fayette Middle School Cub Chorus came in First Place (Junior High Choral Division). Additionally, the Chorus was also named Superstar Champion - for the highest scores in the choral division (Jr. High & Sr. High combined). This was a first for Fayette Middle Chorus! Ms. Risë Rudy, the Chorus Director stated that the students who performed provided the evidence of what hard work and dedication can achieve and she was proud of the their commitment to excellence in their art.

The Pick of the Pickers at the Marietta Bluegrass Festival

The Marietta Bluegrass Festival will be held on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 at Jim Miller Park, home of the North Georgia Fairgrounds. The music starts on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at noon. The bluegrass festival is held inside the climate controlled comfort of Exhibit Hall A. Ticket prices are $10 on Friday, $12 on Saturday, or $20 for the weekend.The second oldest Bluegrass Festival in Georgia is the one to pick for the best in bluegrass music. The Marietta Bluegrass Festival began in October 1969 as the Cobb Bluegrass Festival. While the festival is one of the oldest, it is the bands making their first appearance at the Marietta Bluegrass Festival that are the talk of the town.

A total of 13 bands are scheduled to perform, six of which will be making their first appearance at this event.
