Musicians to perform sonnets written by GSU English instructor
“Eight Personal Ads,” a musical performance of poems from Beth Gylys’ “Matchbook”
7:30 p.m. April 29
Kopleff Recital Hall, 10 Peachtree Center Ave., Atlanta
ISO Undertaker's Daughter
By Beth Gylys
I don't do beaches, romance or dinners out.
If that's what you want, call the other ads.
I'd like a girl in black or mismatched plaids.
Someone who's master of the perfect pout,
her mouth puckered, her lipstick plum. A girl
who likes the feel of glass against her skin.
What she does is what she loves. She's thin
and hard, a little mean. The kind of girl
most men are scared of-that's the one for me.
I like warm beer and psychedelic rock.
I used to have a band called Crusty Jock.
Now I work on websites. I'm twenty-three,
and bored with clueless whiny snobs in suits.
I dream of dark nights, you in thigh-high boots.
A staple of newspapers and the online dating world, the personal ad also serves as inspiration for “Matchbook,” a chapbook of sonnets by Beth Gylys, an associate professor of English at Georgia State.
“I always liked personal ads — I thought they were fun to read, and I thought it would be fun to write,” said Gylys.
Eight of the sonnets from “Matchbook” will be performed by soprano Sharon Stephenson and tenor Richard Clement April 29 at Kopleff Recital Hall. Composer Dan Welcher, a friend of Gylys, set the poems to music.
“After I wrote them, they felt performance-oriented,” Gylys said. “They were all written for different personalities and voices.”
The poems detail searches for love from all walks of life, and Gylys said she found that the sonnet, with its structure emphasizing a change in the middle of the poem, was a natural fit for her subject matter.
“The personal ad really has a two-part structure: This is who I am and what I’m like, and then it switches and says this is what I want,” she said. “A sonnet has an eight-line opening and usually a six-line closing, but it usually has a turn in the middle.”
The performance aspect also highlights the humor in the poems, Gylys said.
“I love that something I’ve written can take on a new form and can be explored through music,” she said. “There’s so much fun and richness about the poems that you wouldn’t really read on the page.”

This Weekend at Spivey Hall – Atlanta Chamber Players and Spring Bach Festival

On Saturday, Apr. 25, the Atlanta Chamber Players, Paula Peace, artistic director, will be celebrating their 33rd season with an 8:15 p.m. performance, "Tour De Force," in the Hall. The Atlanta Chamber Players (ACP) has earned a well-deserved national reputation as a pioneer among chamber groups and is widely respected among arts organizations in the Southeast.

Sunday, April 19
1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
ASO Staff Conductor Jere Flint To Lead The ASYO And Guest Artists From Platypus Theatre
The ASYO and guest artists from Platypus Theatre will perform “Bach to the Future” on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall.
ASO Family Concerts are an essential first step in introducing children to the lifelong pleasures of music. With the Youth Orchestra’s performance of “Bach to the Future,” families will go on a musical adventure to help Corky find a musical happy ending for her time traveling experiment gone awry.
The next Family Concert will be“How the Gimquat Found Her Song,”May 10, 2009 at Atlanta Symphony Hall.
About the Artists
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Staff Conductor Jere Flint leads a triple life in music. He leads the Atlanta Symphony during the Orchestra’s popular Family Concerts series and Symphony Street concerts for youngsters; and he also regularly conducts on the Classic Chastain pops series at Chastain Park. As Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (holder of the Zeist
Foundation Chair) he directs weekly ASYO rehearsals and three major concerts a year, as well as other special concerts throughout the season. And when not on the podium, he is a member of the ASO’s cello section, where he has performed for more than three decades.
While earning his bachelor of music degree at Wittenberg University in Ohio, Mr. Flint was assistant director of the noted choir there. He also arranged and conducted two Christmas recordings by the choir for Columbia Records. He received his Master of Arts degree in music in 1967 from the University of Washington in Seattle, while also serving as manager of the university's opera company and music director for the school of drama. He continued his conducting studies under Otto-Werner Mueller. Mr. Flint has also conducted at the Brevard Music Center, the Sewanee Summer Music Center, Atlanta-Emory Orchestra and the Southeastern Music Center in Columbus, Georgia.
The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra is an integral member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra family and a vigorous part of the cultural fabric of its community. The ASYO strives for national preeminence among youth orchestras, while cultivating the artistic growth and excellence of our members through enriching orchestral experiences and the mentoring of ASO musicians.
Established in 1974, The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra has a history like no other. Born from a symphony orchestra that began as a youth orchestra itself, student education and training has always been paramount. Each year, over three hundred student musicians ages 13-18 audition for the orchestra. Just over one hundred students are selected and dedicate their time to weekly ensemble and sectional rehearsals.
The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra has gained national recognition as one of the best youth orchestra’s in the country. The only American youth orchestra ever to participate in an Olympic Games, the ASYO was a featured ensemble in the 1996 closing ceremonies. ASYO has also been featured on National Public Radio, WABE, and with the rock group, Collective Soul.
The ensemble rehearses and performs in Symphony Hall of the Woodruff Arts Center under the baton of Maestro Jere Flint, conductor since 1979.
Since 1989 Canada’s Platypus Theatre has been a trailblazer in creating programs for children that bring classical music to life in an intelligent, entertaining and interactive way. Critics, educators, musicians, parents and children have lauded the company’s performances for their creativity, originality and high standards of execution. Platypus’ seven original programs have been seen by over half a million spectators in Canada, the United States and on six tours to Southeast Asia. After nearly 400 concerts with more than 50 orchestras worldwide Platypus Theatre has gained an unparalleled reputation for excellence in music education.
In 2006, in collaboration with TV Ontario, Trace Pictures and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Platypus Theatre created a television adaptation of their ever-popular, “How the Gimquat Found Her Song.” The film was broadcast five times on TVO and won an Award of Excellence at the 2008 Accolade Television Awards and Best Children’s Program at the prestigious Banff World Television Festival. Platypus Theatre was also the subject of a nationally broadcast documentary made by CTV in 1991 and of a PBS television full-performance broadcast on UNC-TV in North Carolina in 2000. In Addition to “Gimquat” the company’s programs include: “Emily Saves the Orchestra”, “Rhythm in Your Rubbish”, “Bach to the Future”, “Song of the Forest”, “Charlotte and the Music-Maker” and “A Flicker of Light on a Christmas Night.”

Relax After Taxes with a Musical Celebration of George Gershwin and Kay Swift at the Fayette County Public Library
The Fayette County Public Library and the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library invite the public to attend a free musical and educational presentation on the lives and music of George Gershwin and Kay Swift on Wednesday, April 15 at 3:00 p.m. The timing is perfect for everyone to “relax after taxes” with music, tea, and desserts in the library meeting room. Program and refreshments are offered free of charge.
“Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” is a multimedia exploration of the greatest romance of George Gershwin’s life, told through his scintillating music and that of his longtime love Kay Swift. Gershwin is a household name, but fewer people know the story of Swift, who was herself a trailblazing composer of sophisticated Broadway scores, Balanchine ballets, and popular concert works. Revealing anecdotes about their ten-year affair are shared from the piano by Aaron Gandy, artistic adviser to the Kay Swift Trust. Gandy’s keyboard artistry and informative narration will be accompanied by two talented Broadway vocalists. Featured songs include “Love Is Here To Stay,” “Embraceable You,” “Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off,” “The Man I Love,” “Fine And Dandy,” “S’Wonderful,” and other favorites. “Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off: George Gershwin’s Romance with Kay Swift” is presented by special arrangement with Sue B Music (www.suebmusic).
This musical program is the centerpiece of the Fayette County Public Library’s weeklong celebration of National Library Week, April 13-18. Other special events include: weeklong amnesty on overdue fines for materials returned Monday through Saturday in person during library open hours; a free performance for ages 10 and up by storyteller Ernestine Brown on Tuesday, April 14 at 10:00 a.m., and a Customer Appreciation Reception featuring free cake and punch on Thursday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m.
The Fayette County Public Library is located behind the Fayette County administrative complex in downtown Fayetteville, at the southwest corner of Highways #85 and #54. For additional information, please contact the library at 770-461-8841.
